Laurel 0 #26 April 20, 2004 If you are not a troll, I hate that you are getting such negative response, but please understand that skydivers take their home DZs and affiliated DZs very personally. It's almost like slamming a family member. That said, I have jumped at Skydive Chicago and found it to be a very safe DZ. When I was there, three specific landing areas were designated. One for swoopers, one for experienced jumpers and another for students and low-number jumpers. I chose the latter area because I don't like to fight for real estate. Rook, co-DZO, was one of the friendliest jumpers I have ever encountered. He is a world-champion skydiver and is very focused not only on his skill sets but the safety and training of others. I would give them a shot. And while you are at it, try the other DZs in the area including Chicagoland. I have never jumped there, but Doug and Todd seem to be very friendly people who are willing to go the extra mile. Enjoy...................................................................... jabwoman 0 #27 April 20, 2004 Laurel - I assure you I am not a troll! I appreciate your input and if I insulted anyone I apologize. I still beleive this kind of conversation is what a forum such as this is for. I now feel much more confidence in SDC. I'm signed up and ready to go. chuckakers 425 #28 April 20, 2004 Quotethe amount of skydiving deaths at sd chicago is proportioned to the amount of jumps they do there. in other words yes alot of jumpers have died but the do a hell of a lot of jumping there. Not to pick on SDC's record, but you're assumption of the jumps to deaths ratio there is wrong. Try comparing SDC's ratio to some other "high volume" DZ's like Skydive Arizona (arguably the busiest DZ in the world), Perris, Deland, Elsinore, etc, etc, etc. I have no problem with SDC - just trying to stay with the facts. Dougiefresh 0 #29 April 21, 2004 Hey, also new to skydiving, only ever jumped at SDC. As far as i'm concerned, it's a little slice of heaven on earth. The instructors are awesome, the people are friendly, and it's a real learning community. I have never felt unsafe jumping there. As far as the deaths go, Roger Nelson (former owner) died when someone did a right handed landing pattern. SDC is LEFT HAND. The guy went into Roger's canopy, nothing anyone could do at that point. And some dude died when swooping the pond without instruction and despite warnings from just about everyone. I would not worry about their safety record, they're actually quite good. It's just that a ton of people jump there, and shit happens.Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
Dougiefresh 0 #30 April 21, 2004 Apparently I was misinformed. Please disregard what I said about Roger's death. Just parroting what I heard, I should know better.Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. --Douglas Adams
