Equinox Boogie - Heard of it?

Recommended Posts

Yes, I was invited to it at my one and only FF tunnel camp (also, sadly, the only freeflying that I have ever done) by an Aussie who attended many past years. Seriously, I saw the foootage/video that he brought to show, and Denise, it looks AMAZING!!!

I am not freeflying in the sky (rig fit)...not yet, anyway, so I am not going this year. If I were you and could make it out there, Sunnydee...I'd go, for sure!!!! :)

My boyfriend went in 2002 with some other people from our DZ. Unfortunately, he was planning it for a long time, and by the time we started dating, it was too late for me to prepare for such a trip work wise or financially. He had a good time. Maybe I'll see if he'll post about it here. :)

Yeah, I went 2 years ago (geesh.. has it been that long??). A very fun trip, even though I missed my sweetheart back here in the states.

Two of our friends (one a native Autralian) moved back, and we went to visit them and jump for a few days at the boogie.

The boogie was fun, but here are some tips that we got before we went and some that we added:

1) It gets hot, bring plenty of fluids, and some good sunblock. The sun is much more potent down there.

2) Because it gets really hot, they often have some strong hot winds later in the day. Be prepared just to sit on the ground for a while. Depending on the direction, there are often some bad rotors. Pick your landing area wisely.

3) Bring something to swim in, they have a pool! :)

4) The flys down there suck, they are constantly buzzing around, landing on your head. Bring bug spray, but be prepared to do the 'Aussie Wave' (waving your hand around constantly to shoo the flys away).

5) They have a large selection of beer for sale there, which is nice. People that owe cases of beer bring them to the counter, and they ring a big bell. Usually everyone bum-rushes the counter to get one of the free beers. Keep your ears open.

6) Last year (at least), they had a 'daily video review', where people dumped their footage to a computer and 'Jonesy' compiled it. Pretty cool. I ended up buying an NTSC version of the video stuff.

It was fun for sure. Nice bunch of people.

Just wondering if anyone has heard of this event and/or if anyone was planning to attend this year? The dates are October 23 - 31 and I think it is somewhere near Queensland. I would LOOOOOVE to go to Australia!

A fantastic boogie at a fantastic dz in a fantastic place.

I'd traveled to many places in australia and the only kangaroo I ever saw was roadkill until I got to toogoolawah. In the AM the landing area is full of them.

In '00 they had an odd way of "spotting" They basically programmed the GPS to the pea pit. Contrary to every other place where the red/yellow lights are some combination of standby/open the door and the green light means go. Here the red light meant 1 mile short of the peas, the yellow .5 miles, and the green, right over it now. The organizer of the first group out was supposed to decide when to go. So whereas the GPS could actually be used to relieve them from this task of spotting every single load (which they did a poor job of), it was just wasted anyone can look out and spot the peas, but jump run and exit position are a bit more complicated.

As a freeflier getting out last, I rarely made it back to the DZ even when jumping a caravan. In the skyvan, forget it.

Oh yeah, and the flies - you can't even imagine. When you return from landing, your canopy will be COVERED in them like a blanket. They will fly into your mouth while you are talking. Constantly in your ears, nose, eyes.

If you land out watch for snakes. They are frequent, and they are all poisonous, most of them deadly. I nearly stepped on one. It heard me coming, and didn't flinch when I approached. It didn't even coil up, or look menacing. Just stared at me, as if to say "one step closer, Bruce and you're dead"

Buy your beer. Australian beer rules are strictly enforced.

As a Ramblers regular jumper....well will be again after birth of first child!...I can tell you that Equinox goes off and a lot of people go to a lot of lengths to make sure everyone has a good time! Parties EVERY night and heaps of different jumps to get on during the day including chopper, tracking, freefly, flat, inflatables, hoop jumps etc and a really good vibe!
People come from all over the world as well as Australia and definatley the weekend regs who will be there in force!! I (although somewhat biased) reckon it is well worth the trip over here!!
I will be there baby in arms...it is my reward of nearly 12 months of non jumping thanks to life and the pregnancy so look out!! :D;)

Awww very thoughtful but it looks like a trip like this needs to be planned for a bit more in advance. Gonna cost me $2,000 US dollars just to GET THERE...ouchie ~

Have fun to all and perhaps I'll make it next go round

I've paid for everything now! I'm so going to be there....

I've put my name down for a bunkroom, no idea if there are still any available. I'm going to email them next week about it.

Does anyone know if there's going to be any BMIs there?

There are no BMI's within Australia. So unless there is a visiting one I don't fancy your chances. Besides it probably would not be necessary.

Matt I know Russ, he's from here, Jumps at Hillman Farm, get on out to the Mumbles meet and ask him if he'll Instruct a sub 500 jumper.
I'm not certain he will

When's Mumbles? It's not on my calendar....

I wouldn't feel confident asking him now anyway. I'm not all that current. No jumps in a month, and it doesn't look like I'll be getting any in the next month either...

Ummmm, I beg to differ on that one!!!

Jimmy Freeman has his BMI rating and last time I checked (about 10min ago) he is in the country!;)

Unless something goes awry, James and I will both be there this year.

*Bump*

Just thought I'd bump this, because only 52 sleeps to go until Equinox Boogie! B| It starts just as the US winter starts creeping in, plenty of time to book those flights. It will be the most awesome bikini weather - make sure your tan doesn't fade for a little while more.

I'm all booked in and can't wait - last one I went to was in '94 and it totally went off!

Look at this: http://www.ramblers.com.au/whatson/equinox.aspx and tell me you don't want to go!!

(as an aside, I thought the 80-way planned for JB's 80th birthday might be in jeapordy when JB broke his leg in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago... I emailed him my concern and he assured me he would most definitely be jumping by Equinox. they built 'em tougher in those days!) B|:S:)
SEE YA THERE! :P

nothing to see here
