turnlow 0 #1 May 9, 2004 I am a recent transplant to the London area and I have couple of questions for the UK jumpers.. What are your recommendations for London area DZs? What is most convenient DZ to London? How do you get there without a car? Are there DZ's around that you can reach via ever reliable British Rail? Thanks for your help and Blue Skies __________________________________________________It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. Markj 0 #2 May 9, 2004 Hello I stay in London and I jump at Hinton which is up near Oxford. Its about 1hr 20 mins on the train from Marylebone Station to Banbury train station and from there its a £12 cab ride. If you live in South London I think its closer to go to Headcorn which is also accessible by train. You can catch a train from Waterloo East to go there, I think its about an hour away. thelem 0 #3 May 9, 2004 The BPA has a list of all the official DZs in the UK at http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzone.htm I would recommend one of these 3 (Hinton, Headcord & Netheravon): http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzhintonskydivingcentre.htm http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzheadcornpc.htm http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzoneapa.htm Personally I have only been to Netheravon (APA), which is just about accessible by public transport. You need to get the train to Salisbury (or Pewsey, but I don't know that route), then you either need to get a lift to the DZ, or get the Wilts & Dorset bus to the village, which is a 5 minute walk away. Make sure you check the bus timetable, because walking there (even from Durrington - the last bus stop at some times of day) is not a good idea, and a taxi from salisbury costs over £20. altichick 1 #4 May 10, 2004 If you want to save on the cab fare... you can also get to Hinton by going from Oxford or Banbury to Kings Sutton (tiny local station) which is about 2 or 3 miles from the DZ... I used to come from Cardiff by train before I had a car, it's walkable (just!) but if you call them I'm sure there will be someone who can come and collect you... Don't sweat the petty things... and don't pet the sweaty things!
vt1977 0 #5 May 10, 2004 The easiest DZ to get to by public transport is Headcorn Parachute Club in Kent. www.headcornparachuteclub.co.uk It is a one hour journey from London Charing Cross/London Bridge/Waterloo East direct to Headcorn. Once you get there you can get a taxi from Headcorn train station to the airfield for around £4. There may well be other options too – check out the full list of BPA DZs here: http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzone.htm Hope that helps! Vicki
