Gear check, gear check, gear check!

"just off AFF" and "did not have an A license" means she is STILL a student. An instructor should have gear checked her before boarding the plane.

Maybe so, but how many times have you seen:
-Student Gears-up
-Instructor/JM or coach goes over gear (straps, 3-rings, bridal routing, etc)
-Then depending on rig (reflex for instance where Cypress is not visible without removing rig) simply ASKS: "Cypres on"?

If the "student" ansers YES -who's "fault" then? My gear check for that "student" is now complete. But then again personally, I would NOT have stopped the jump altogether either, JUST for the Cypres having not been turned on.

I think the student should land if the Cypres was off. If you have a rule that says that students need Cypres - you better stick to it. 1) You either have a rule or not 2) If that student had gone in on that jump (and Cypres was off) the lawyers would have had a field day, i.e. the DZ and the instructor would have been liable.

Mikkey is the only one who got the point.
These days, if you allow anyone to jump rental gear without an AAD - or without turning on the AAD - you leave your self wide open for a negligence lawsuit.

Back in 1994 or 1995, I was rigging for Square One when they started installing Cypri in all their rental rigs. The most scary part of the whole process was the three Cypres firings in the first month! How many close calls did Square One customers have in the preceding years?
