huzkers 0 #1 June 23, 2004 Anyone know how good the 2 DZ's are in the Houston area, (SD Spaceland and SD Houston) I have been to SDH and they seem pretty safe but have "heard" SDS is better for student learning? Any comments or any locals that give a new aff'er some advice as to which dz? Thanks!!
ifics 0 #2 June 23, 2004 Both are GREAT DZ's with GREAT instructors... You cant go wrong no matter which you decide on...
 murphyka 0 #3 June 23, 2004 Spaceland is my home DZ and would recommend it to anyone!!! It is an extremely friendly atmosphere and there are tons of quality jumpers to learn from there. The instruction is definitely top notch. I haven't jumped at SDH so I can't really offer an opinion. Come out to Spaceland and try it out....Don't forget the beer!!!!!Blue Skies!!! The following isn't to offend anyone, I have made excellent friends at both dropzones and the staff at both are great people. First off, SDS and SDH have different student training programs, so I can't really comment on SDH's program, but I do know both dropzones have awesome instructors. The spaceland student training program may be arguably more thorough, maybe some others who have gone through AFF can comment on this, but the spaceland program is also more expensive to go through. Once I completed student training at spaceland and got about 40 jumps under my belt I decided to head over to SD Houston to check it out. I must say, I have found a new home at SDH for a few reasons. First off, the jumps are $15 for the same plane and same altitude as compared to $20 at Spaceland. There also seems to be much more opportunity for a low time jumper like myself to get pick up jumps with more experienced fun jumpers at SDH which has improved my skills tremendously in a shorter amount of jumps. As I see it this could be due to various reasons, at spaceland most of the more experienced jumpers are usually doing serious training on teams and the staff are so busy they hardly make any fun jumps. In 3 months of being a licensed jumper at spaceland I had fewer opportunities and offers to jump with people than I did in one weekend at Skydive Houston, that was probably partially my fault as well. anyway, that's my 2 cents. I like both DZ's and we're lucky enough in Houston that both of our DZs have super otters :) and I will continue to jump at both, but at the moment, for economic reasons and for the want to jump with people and not constantly be doing solos, I believe you'll be seeing me a lot more at Skydive Houston in the coming months. -Bill---------- gravity rat formula 109 Team Gonzo and Team Jamaican Me Crazy no bullshit, let's just fly, be safe, and have fun.
 tspillers 0 #6 June 24, 2004 Actually, there is a third. Skydive Aggieland is in Bryan. If you are on the north or west side of Houston, it is closer the SDS. We are a smaller DZ, but have a great time. Come up and visit sometime. If you are still working on student jumps, we have great instructors and we all use Skydive University techniques in our teaching. We have a 182, and the twin turbine should be back in a couple of weeks. In the evening, we turn on the beer light and we have Shiner Bock and some light beer on tap for free. Todd I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example. I STP (student training progression/program) is a great way to learn how to skydive..the aff instructors are very knowledgeable and easy to get along with... the atmosphere is light and there a several disciplines people can introduce you to at the DZ... there is an ENORMOUSE amount of talent and experience in freefly (with spaceland anomally) and belly (deguello sp?) located at the DZ, which, from what I have seen if you ask they will take you up. being (probably) the largest dropzone in Texas, I would definately reccomend Spaceland... and if you want to do a tandem or know someone who does I will gladly take you up!_________________________________________ this space for rent. Both are great DZs, though. SDH seems to have more of a laid back feel with some good talent, Spaceland seems to have more of a "professional/team jumper" feel with a lot of talent training every weekend. Dallas seems to have a get it done type feel as well, with a lot of talent on hand doing big-ways and such. Aggieland is more of a "skydiver family" type DZ, with the DZ being friends as well someone to see on the DZ, welcoming new folks nearly instantly into the DZ. All four have good training programs (SD Aggieland, Spaceland and Dallas all using the Tandem ISP as well as the other methods). At the end of the day, you've got to really travel a little bit to truely find your home DZ. Since every DZ has jump aircraft, jumpers, etc, it comes down to where you feel best and have fun jumping. As well as where you can learn from people you can learn from.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
