I just came back from kolomna.

i have one advice: don't register your visa there, it will cost you more than a fine you have to pay if they get you with unregistered visa...

Otherwise, everything is perfect, except for the showers and toilets if you'll be staying at the DZ.

-It can get pretty sandy in the packing tents, a mat for your rig might be a good idea.
-Landing by the windsock is much safer than dodging people with swoop lane fixation (i.e. most of them)
-The water from the pipes is safe to drink. Home-brewed liquor a little less so.
-Don't order chicken in the cafeteria.
-Behaving like an asshole in the local clubs is not a good idea, especially if you don't speak Russian.
-Policemen are not always your friends. On a related subject, it is not advisable to carry large amounts of cash with you.
-Taxi from dropzone to town costs about 150 rubles, 200 tops, negotiate a price before you get in and always pick the slowest looking car, unless you desire an experience far more dangerous than jumping out of airplanes.
-Bring earplugs for the Mi-8.
-If an occasion calls for a case of beer, it will be gone in 2 seconds, so act fast.

A few more...

-Don't drink the Vodka in the casino (Grande):S :(
-Don't eat Pizza for at least a month before you go (You will eat several months worth of Pizza as the the only decent place to eat in Kolomna is Viva Pizza!) :D
-Take some strong bug spray for the evenings
-Don't let kittens sleep in your tent... they have fleas!![:/]

Aww, c'mon dude, the girls were pretty fine, and that stupid Russian colonel couldda just learned English. Then I wouldn't have needed to tell him to fuck off.

And I didn't behave like an asshole. Ask AltiChick. Or better yet, don't.

Got thrown out of Plasma though. Long story, really not my fault. Plasma is pretty good overall, except for the ass-grabbing drunk gay guys who have to be dealt with.

The chicken in the hole is just fine. I had two, and it tasted like small kittens.

anyone flown with transaero with rigs?

their website says the carryon limit is only 5kg (usually its 8kg). and my wings is clse to 13kg :(
usually i dont have a problem but i don't know how strict they are.

i thought of calling them in advance and ask (we're a group of 27 so it might be a problem) but i'm not sure if asking is better than just showing up and hoping for the best...

any ideas?

whats the deal with registering the visa?
here is what i've heard, but i'm not sure how true it is...

- you have to register when getting there
- it can cost about $30
- it can't be done in kolomna (DZ or town)
- many told me not to bother and simply risk a $15 fine.

i dont mind the fine, but i would mind a trip to the police station ...

any advice?

Me (and several others) paid 50 USD to register in Moscow, but with the company we used (Intel Service) we had to wait 3 days to get the stamped visa form back!

You can register at (some) hotels in Moscow but again I think it depends what visa company you used.

I know several people who didn't register and the maximum *official* fine when you leave for an unregistered visa is 1000 rubles (about 30 USD). But I guess you can't rule out dodgy customs/immigartion staff when you leave trying to ask for more!!

I'm there with some friends from the 7th Aug to the 22nd Aug -- see you there fedykin.

Had some questions about transfers and accommodation (no reply from the DZ yet):

What's the easiest way (taxi, bus, train, etc.) to get to the DZ from Moscow?

What's the best place to stay, on the DZ (tent or bunkhouse) or in the hotels -- hotels are over 10km away aren't they?

I would recommend to stay at a hotel. August may be rainy enough to get you waking up in an aquarium instead of tent. Taxi to the hotel will cost something about $2 per person - not an issue, I believe.

Minivan from Moscow to Kolomna is definitely the easiest way...just hope that yours arrives on time. Me and George ended up taking a beat-to-shit Lada (its driver could, amazingly, still push it to 140km/h, usually when we least wanted him to) after waiting outside the terminal for an hour. Roman's number was unavailable and the van apparently showed up 15 minutes after we left.
Cheapest way, however, is to take a bus or train, but I think that could be too confusing if it's your first time there.

As for sleeping- bunkbeds are about 3€ per night and I think this is the option I'll be taking next year. There's just something about sleeping on the dropzone, a hotel simply wouldn't feel right.

And for god's sake, please don't register your visa!!:S

It's probably easier to get a car to the DZ the bus station in Moscow is pretty confusing :Sand working out which bus to take is a nightmare! Luckily Dan helped me out with that part. :)
But it's easy enough to get back from the DZ to Moscow by bus or train (Bus cost about 130 rubles which is about 4 dollars!).

Down side is you have to use the metro and a bus to get to the airport which is a pain if you have a lot of gear. The metro is pretty crowded at the best of times!!

As for accomodation, start off at the DZ, if you decide to upgrade to the hotel (or if you want a shower!:P) then you can always do that later.

Kolomna town is about 30 mins in a taxi (although waiting for a taxi from the DZ can take a while) Getting a taxi from town is easy - they are everywhere! Usual rate is 150 rubles for a trip between Kolomna and the DZ although sometimes drivers will ask for more!!

You must register your visa with in 3 working days of entering Russia, offically you are supposed to do this at each new city you go to but I'm not sure how they enforce that.

Registering your visa with a visa agency in Mosocw will cost you 50 USD and may take up to 3 days to process. That's my experience from IntelService anyway. You can also register by staying in a hotel in Mosocw, (Hotel Kolomna near the DZ seem unable to provide this service)

Alternative is to pay the fine when you leave Russia which rumour has it is only 1000 rubles (30 USD)

HI Everybody,

I am trying to set up a trip (with 6 friends) to Aerograd still this August and we have all the paperwork on hold because of the invitation-to-get-the-ticket-to-get-the-voucher-to-get-the-visa soap opera...[:/]

We cannot reach no one at Aerograd either by phone or e-mail. We've tried all the addresses and numbers in the website to no avail. Can any of you who've been there assist with a reliable contact?
