WFFC, Convention Load Organizers

Recommended Posts

Just a reminder to those of you who have never been to the World Freefall Convention or who are considering going for the first time.

The Convention Load Organizers are available free of charge and can provide nearly any type of (mainly RW) load organizing you need. (Of course there are specialty loads too, light hoop jumps, streamer jumps, etc.)

There are organizers for ALL experience levels, so you will be able to find people to jump with that are near your experience level if you wish.

In particular, there are special sections of organizers for "novices", meaning that if you have enough jumps to get into the Convention as a skydiver, then you can jump with an organizer. Some of these great people absolutely love to jump with novice jumpers.

Also this year there is going to be a section of organizers that are going to concentrate on the "intermediate" skill level. In the past we have combined intermediate and advanced, and some of the intermediates have not gotten the attention they need.

And of course, as always, the "advanced" sections will be doing medium-ways and big-ways.

"Something for everyone" we call it.

A special note for those who are worried about safety at the Convention and what you might regard as crowded airspace. Find a Convention Load Organizer and let them help you learn about how to take care of yourself at the Convention.

There are a lot of time periods when the airspace is not at all crowded, especially in the morning, so don't hesitate to come to the WFFC if you want to.

And please read the "Welcome Book" (Official Guide) that you will be given at Registration. It contains safety information and articles.

I am sure Max, Dave, Anomaly and the other FF organizers would disagree. The RW groups are larger, but you can get one-on-one free FF coaching and organizing at any time.

What is defined as "Intermediate"?

What do you think your skill level is, whats the largest formation you've ever been on (successful formation)?

For instance, if I was there, I have 1200 jumps, but I'd stick to the intermediate group since my RW experience isn't as good as some folks with 500 jumps that are into RW, that did SDU, tunnel camps and are on medium to big RW formations every weekend.

Good question, however the answer is not a precise one, and I'm sure you would get a slightly different answer from different organizers of these groups.

My definition is those who are experienced with making successful small formations, perhaps at their small single C182 drop zone, and wish to make larger formations from the larger aircraft available at the WFFC.

Mary Santangelo has volunteered to concentrate on the intermediate groups, as well as a few other organizers.

I have done many in past years, but when the WFFC moved to Rantoul and the attendance waned, the distinction between the intermediate and advanced groups blurred with fewer skydivers signing up for a particular group.

We are trying this year to make it more distinct for the benefit of the "intermediates".

I found that to be untrue. The last 2 years i swung by the FF LO tent and was always told i had to wait cause they were busy. Plus i was told that can't do 1:1 jumps, they're supposed to have at least 3 paying jumpers with them. Gave up and found other people to jump with.

Oops! My mistake guys (what do I know I'm an RW guy.)

You are right there is no "free" 1-on-1 FF coaching at the convention. However, if you pay for their slot, I bet you can get 1-on-1 coaching. These guys love to jump and would rather be in the air than waiting for a big way to build.

Make them an offer and see what they say!

Thanks Gary for the additional organizer information.

Blue skies,

Jim

Jim, that would sort of put them out of the realm of what they are there to do then. You see, Dave Brown and the Freefly Training Center pay to be the sole "contract" freefly training vendor, just as Packin Cathy (at least in the past) pays to be "the" contract packing concession and those guys from Hinkley (I think) are the only ones who can do AFF there. If Anomoly/Guano are doing one on one, then they better not get caught doing it with an organizer hat on.

Cora,

My goal for working with the intermediates is to get them up to speed to be able to do some larger stuff if they want.

I have found in over the years being a LO at WFFC, there was a middle area that needed to be covered. There are jumpers that aren't at the novice level, but they aren't really ready for doing 20 or bigger ways. Yet, they are flying well enough to get into their slot.

I'd like to see the intermediate area start off with 8 ways, then build to larger, as the learning curve goes up.

Please join us.

I believe that Guano and Anomoly are in the same realm as the FF training center (Link). But I was not given the specifics on what they're doing and how they're doing it. Would be best to ask them once on site. The link has the info that I was given by the collective group (Guano, Anomoly FF training center).
