anyone jump at South Cerney in the UK?

Recommended Posts

my friend is packing there on weekends right now and i said i would come up with her one time. What's it like? She raves about the place but she isn't jumping.
Aircraft? Time to altitude? How many lifts on a good day? Ticket prices? Bunkhouses any good? Much freeflying going on? etc etc blah di blah

Thanks

Anyway, I've just moved to Cheltenham so I'm pretty close and would be up for a vist some time. Let us know what it's like.

I'm going to be going there on Sunday for an initial visit with a few friends. Our club's thinking of moving there for this next year. That would mean an extra 30 odd people, roughly a 50/50 mix of FF and RW plus perhaps 40 some first jump students.

I hear it's always mainly been demo jumpers and some RW. Now it has a bigger plane it has a couple of teams jumping there and a larger contingent of free flyers.

It has a Let410 now so it's going to be doing something like 16 or 17 to altitude in about quarter of an hour - about as respectable as you get.

Don't know a great deal about its facilities. I understand you must have demo clearance to land in the exp accuracy area and they're big on getting people through their demo accuracy.

Think it's £10 membership and £17 to 13k or something but for some reason they don't cater for exp jumpers on their web site. No accom, but free camping.

Yes, and it is very good - been jumping there most of the summer. Very friendly and well run by the Silver Stars parachute team.

Prices - £17 to 13K or £16 if you buy blocks of 10. On Fridays, it's military rates - £11.

Sat - 10am - 7pm
Sun - 10am - 6pm
Shuts down one weekend a month for the neighbours.

If you are turning up, make sure you bring photo ID as it is a military base. If you've got APA (Nethers), that is good enough.

We've have been averaging 5-7 a day at the weekends without rushing. Sometimes, a whole lift is full of tandems if it's exceptionally busy, but then the next is always an experienced lift. I've never had a problem with this though.

It's mostly RW jumpers, but more freaks are moving there - one team and 4 or 5 of us casual freeflyers.

No bunkhouse, but you can camp. There is a snack bar that does toasties, sandwiches, drinks etc. BBQ after jumping on Saturdays + bar.

mr2mk1g - you mean the collegiates are coming? I witnessed the aftermath in Elsinore last year...god help us! ;)

Popped in there a few weeks ago and they did a pretty good job. I was on a lift within 10 mins of getting there, got down and was on a 20 min call for the next.

Not really enough people to fill a Let so they sent it anyway:)
They don't require APA (no pointless expense there!) and were pretty good about letting me jump on credit before I could go to town and get some cash. Be aware that they don't have credit card facilities so take cash or cheque book.

Huge landing area and a closer section for those with demo licenses (the demo license is a bit OTT, most experienced jumpers wouldn't have a problem but main area isn't much further.)

Good to see a place trying to give a big plane a go and I hope it works out for them.

As the map says 6 miles North of Swindon.

Went over there on Sunday. Nice place and technically the closest DZ to home for me. Very quite with only just enough people to keep the let running. Loads of tandems and some freeflyers and that’s about it. Nice carpeted packing area, café type thing for toasties and snacks. Chill out room. Toilets are there but a bit of a treck. There’s no bunk house but there’s free camping although the big let down for me is no showers. (It’s an army barracks – how do they not have showers?).

This is a DZ where you can easily do loads and loads of jumps per day if you really wanted to as there’s no one filling up the loads in front of you. Go somewhere more popular, even with more planes and you’ll always find there’s a few loads manifested in front of you. Here you can just rock up and jump on a load.
