So here's the lowdown on the NorCal Classic Swoop Competition. It will
be this weekend at Bay Area Skydiving in Byron. We would like to have
all competitors out there at 8am for a breifing and we'd like to get the
first load up by 8:30. There has been some morning fog this week, but it
doesn't look bad for the weekend. We would like to get the whole
competition done on Saturday, but we will use Sunday as a weather day.
The cost will be $100 for the six jumps in the "qualifying" round. There
will be two speed rounds, followed by two distance rounds and then two
rounds of accuracy. The top ten swoopers will proceed to the final
round, which will consist of one additional distance round and then one
additional accuracy round. The cost of the two additional jumps will be
$28 ($14 per jump). If we get six rounds in on Saturday that will
consitute a completed competition (rather than trying to get everyone
back on Sunday). If we get less than six rounds completed it will roll
over to Sunday. The scoring will be similar to last event. For speed we
will combine your scores from the two rounds and you will receive points
based on your overall placement. For example; if we have 20 competitors
and you have the highest score for the two jumps in that particular
discipline, you would receive 20 points toward the overall score. If you
are 2nd you get 19 points, 3rd = 18 points, etc. In addition to the
overall winners we will give gold, silver and bronze medals for speed,
accuracy and distance. The two additional "finals" rounds will be added
to your qualifying round scores and a winner for distance and will be
determine by the combined scores of all three distance or accuracy
jumps. Obviously, if you don't make the finals it will be hard for you
to medal in the distance or accuracy categories, since you will only
have the combined score of two jumps rather than three. Last time we
scored each individual jump seperately, but this time we will combine
the two (or three) rounds and then give you a score. For example, if you
had an accuracy jump that scored 85 and then you verticalled on the
second jump you would have a total score of 85. If someone had a 50 and
then a 55, they would have 105 points. We will go over the rules and
scoring at the briefing, but if you have any questions feel free to send
me an email.

Also, for those of you that are on the fence about competing or don't
think you are good enough yet, I encourage you to give it a shot. It is
a great learning tool and it is a lot of fun. There is always great
comraderie amongst the competitors and it is a great way to get your
first taste of real competition. Competition jumping is very different
because you are naturally nervous and/or excited and your brain and body
operate differently when placed under that stress and you'll be that
much more experienced the next time you compete.

JUDGES NEEDED!!! As of right now, I have one judge (Ava). It just won't
work without some help. We can handle the speed judging with one person
since we will be scoring it from videotape, but it will be nearly
impossible to handle the distance and accuracy rounds. If you can help,
please let me know.

See you all this weekend!
