Russian dropzones??

Recommended Posts

I am interested in any information on Russian dropzones, preferably busy ones, that anyone may have first-hand experience of.
Any info on dz conditions;friendliness;accomodation;food etc would be much appreciated.
I have checked out the dropzone database but want to know more...

Nice

The three busy dropzones would be Kolomna, Stupino and Borki, and a couple other ones I don't know much about.

If you are going to jump in the winter, your best bet is Kolomna which has recently suffered a 20% price increase (they're at $13 a jump now; talk them into a quantity discount if you're buying in bulk), but is open all week long -- unlike the two other (unsure about Stupino). Come spring/summer, you will not make a wrong choice with either DZ.

In my biased opinion, of all three Borki is the smallest, the cheapest and the friendliest one. Lean and mean, but in a good sense :)

The facilities and accomodation are fairly similar on all these DZs.

If you're coming over here, drop me a PM will ya?

Edit to add: you can go to http://www.skyclub.ru and download the top two videos that were shot in Borki to get an overall impression of the place. All of you!:P

been to kolomna last august. can't go wrong with it. although i've heard good things about stupino and borki too.

i suggest you talk to andrew or roman from kolomna, they could help you with getting there and sleeping arrangements (PM me if you want more details about the arrangements).

there's a good chance we'll be going there again next year, even with the 20% raise, its still cheaper than most other DZs.

dude, there was a local girl from kolomna (town, not DZ) that was stalking one of my friends.
they kissed once at a night club and she decided
that they are a couple B|

but yes, there are nice things to look at in kolomna (but when the taxi driver doesnt go below 150 kph, its hard to notice the details)...

besides, got anything against slovenian girls?

gladly...
here are two most visited slovenian skydive pages:
http://www.padalskiklub-andromeda.si
http://www.padliangeli.org/news.php

but it's not a lot of info in english so i'll explain them a little...

the first is DZ from Maribor, it's actually on the national airport in maribor. the problem is the only plane they have (for jumping) is cessna. though lately at least once/month if not twice pilatus porter pc-6 is rented for the weekend. unfortunately it's from slovenian army and they have a stupid regulation to fly only 12.000ASL which is about 10.000 feet AGL. (price for 10.000AGL is 15eur)

the other page is from DZ that is in Loce near Slovenske konjice. They don't have the plane yet, so when we jump there we either rent antonov-2 (don't laugh) or the same slovenian army pilatus PC-6.(same price 15eur).But when did you plan to visit our country? because, well it's nothing sure yet, but this DZ just might get a turbine true skydiving aiplane capable of flying well above fu!^#%g 12.000 agl. sometime soooon.

the third DZ is the most jumpable DZ in slovenia i'd say, but the sad thing is that all the jumps here are made from antonov-2 from 9000 AGL. the price is 17eur, but it's jumpable every weekend, and in the season even during the week, weather permitting of course. this is the DZ where people from Ljubljana (Capital) mostly jump. And it's located in Precna near Novo Mesto.

There are other DZs too but,... well my advice is choose one of there three.

so much about the DZs.next thing i find very important are the people.
on first DZ in MB there are all sorts of people FF,FS, young old, pretty, ugly,... you just have to find out who is who. it's also the DZ of our national team in FreeFly (when me and jerry81 get a decent cameraguy, things will change, i hope :)), so if you'll be there just find them and you'll be fine B| or you can send him a pm he's here too (unutch)

the other DZ (the one i prefer) are mostly young, 32 is the oldest guy i think. well at least skydivers (pilots are older...), they mostly jump Formation Skydiving, unles me or national team is there to do some FF. There are also national teams in 4-way and 8-way on this DZ. they're the most flexible and understanding people here if you ask me, and lost of fun. the recipe is: "just add beer" :P

the third one is also mixed with all sorts of people. and they mostly jump to teach students. and they're very good at it. but that's about it. of course there's all sorts of fun jumping people there but nothing serious so far...

ugh long post.

but really not to bash slovenian skyidiving or anything but if you want to train and jump every day, go to kolomna. I mean they do so as many jumps in two weekends that we do in whole year. and they have the true DZ.

on the other hand if you wanna see a country with a lot of trees, have fun with local skydivers, and jump every weekend you're very welcome.oh and we too have gorgeous girls in Slovenia, but there's only one way to find out if it's true :)

hmm, too bad, it doesnt seem as though you DZs can host big groups :(

i guess the best solution would be for you to pack all of the nice slovenian jumpers and meet us in kolomna B|

anyway, thanks for the tips. we're still in the process of checking the options :)

Hi Matt, was at Kolomna at the end of August this year, it's a great DZ would recommend it to anybody. You're a bit "out there" in the woods so worth a trip into town if your staying at the bunkhouse Or hit the vodka in the "restaurant"!

From UK fly to Domodedova airport (BA, Swiss Air...) and jump in a taxi, certainly an experience, it would be really scary but you have to keep your eyes closed as the fumes from the Volga's engines dissolve westerners corneas at 10 paces.

Flight from UK will cost you £250 ish, Russian visa about £60, Vodka £2 per bottle

oh yeah, forgot about that.
the other airport (sharment-something) if further away.
and if you're coming as a big group (which you are) , they'll send a bus (which, unlike taxis, doesnt travel at warp speed...) to pick you up...
see you there next time...

Hey K2,
Good to know you're still alive buddy. How's things in NZ?You must be getting busy by now.You a TI yet?
When are you going to Russia? And which DZ?I'm organising a "budget boogie" for mid July. Not sure where yet,it could be Kolomna,Borki,or Stupino.I'm trying to keep the price down to the equivalent of about 2000 of your Kiwi dollars(that will include 50 skydives.)Would be great to see you there. We could get seriously damaged on proper vodka($6 a bottle!)

Anyway, got back from Oz in April and have been concentrating on freeflying since then....I'm still shit though!:S

My mate Alex (Taupo) is back jumping after smashing himself up which is good news and he hopes to be back doing tandems next year sometime.

Anyway, get back to me about Russia

Matt

wicked bro,

well i'm planning on being in russia in early may. i've been told that is when the weather starts to get good again? i'm gonna buy a 50 jump book(about $750 kiwi) and (hopefully)do those in two weeks. my girlfriend is into freestyle so we're gonna train together for our next nationals, starting a 4way team too. i've mainly been freeflying too when i'm not work jumping! i've done about 1000 jumps since i saw you in B.S.C. ;)

your boogie sounds like fun but i can't get time off at that time of year coz somone else already has!

where are you based?

good to hear alex is back into it. wasn't he in glenorchy? he smashed himself good! (never swoop fence posts eh)
