crozby 0 #1 January 7, 2005 I'm moving to Sydney later this year and want to make sure I end up living within 45 minutes drive of a good DZ. Can anyone recommend a good DZ and a nice area to live close by?

CornishChris 5 #3 January 10, 2005 You will probably end up living about 1 hr from a good DZ: Picton as Squeak said, and unless you want to live a bit out of Sydney then the magic 45 mins will be hard to acheive. However after a few months in Australia you will start to look at distance as the Aussies do - i.e. 1 hr is fuck all. In fact a 5/6 hr drive for one night is not unusual. I would definanty go for live in Sydney and drive the extra few minutes. You should fit in at Picton, lots of Pommies like us. CJP Gods don't kill people. crozby 0 #4 January 10, 2005 i've got a wife and baby so was planning on living not too central - want to rent something detatched in a nice suburb no more than 30-45 mins commute from work (i'm guessing my job will be central sydney). looking at rental prices it seems i'd have to live a little way out to be able to afford something nice. have you lived in sydney? can you recommend any suburbs? Within 30-45 mins of CBD is very pricey, you'll need to live further out and possible commuter via public transport. Sydneys transport system is pretty good, Yeah you're right. I looked at house prices when i was plannng on moving 3 years ago and they were loads cheaper than now. There seems to have been a real hike in prices lately. This is what puts me off geting a train to work there though: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4032395.stm
CornishChris 5 #7 January 11, 2005 Croz You live in London. It has always amused me when Sydney press starts complaining about their rail services when if you compare the service here to that of the UK it is brilliant. Public transport is pretty good here. i would recommend living somewhere like Marouubra - 20 mins from CBD but near to beach etc. Take advantage of the lifestyle while you can. crozby 0 #9 January 11, 2005 QuoteMaroubra is a friggin long way from Picton though That's the problem - someone needs to open a DZ on the beach! My (shitty little) map makes it look like it'd be an hours drive from Maroubra to Picton (getting on 1 then 31 or 1,3,5,31). Do you think it'd take much longer? At Nowra they try to jump the beach at Jarvis Bay once every couple of months Btw does anyone know if any fun jumpers can jump with http://www.skydivethebeach.com.au/ ? Oh one last thing. You can find a list of Dropzones at http://www.apf.asn.au/ and click on APF clubs.

Eiley 0 #15 January 12, 2005 QuoteBy the way, are there any Easter Boogies in NSW or Queensland area? Picton is having an Easter Boogie - I think it might be a $25 Madness boogie, but I'm not sure. Togoolawah has a learning curve camp the week before easter. nothing to see here
crozby 0 #16 January 12, 2005 I can't wait to get down there. Here in the UK it's like being near the north pole at the moment - we have whole days when it doesnt seem to get properly light. I'm so desperate to jump i keep wanting to get my rig out, unpack it & pack it up a few times, just to do something skydivey, which just isn't fucking normal. Seriously bad withdrawal symptoms...
CornishChris 5 #17 January 13, 2005 Picton is having the $25 boogie I think. The DZ is about 50 mins from the airport. Best way is either: 1. Find some chump to give you a lift 2. Get the tandem bus out of town (leaves at 7am) 3. Get train to Picton then get someone to pick you up Will you actually be staying at the airport or are you planning to get off the plane then head down? CJP Gods don't kill people. linn 0 #18 January 13, 2005 Sounds great ***Will you actually be staying at the airport or are you planning to get off the plane then head down? No, I will not stay at the airport, I'll just arrive there from Thailand.. but I would LOVE to get off the plane IN head down Planning to stay a few days to jump with you guys, have to find a place to stay near DZ, what would you recommend? Do you jump weekdays as well?Sometimes I act before I think...OK!OK! Pretty much all the time!
CornishChris 5 #19 January 13, 2005 There are generally a few loads weekday mornings but this is often driven by tandems. Sometimes there are teams training and they will put the smaller aircraft up. Around easter when the boogie is on there will be week long jumping - reallty depends on the time. not too hard to get 3 jumps in on a good weekday though - most i ever did was 8 on "Big Thursday" CJP Gods don't kill people. Squeak - you stick to your side of the country and I'll stick to mine Maroubra would be a great choice, it is still cheap compared to the rest of the eastern suburb beachs, and you will get a good deal for a family place... also the drive to picton will be less then an hour.... Mind you when CJP and I drive down, we leave at 6am so the roads are empty, but still its 80Km, its not going to take long. And one think to remember with your UK driving licence if you get busted for speeding the police cant give you points, you will get a fine, but no points..... I have been driving on a UK licence for 3 years over here now, and it has saved my bacon a couple of times ----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+

Don't plan to get one either Are there any bed&breakfasts or cheap, ok hotels nearby? There are places to stay around Picton, but none within walking distance to the DZ (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Camping isnt that bad, if you are here for the boogie then there will be plenty of people staying in tents. Plus the weather is rather nice over here, and by easter it will have cooled down a bit. There is also a "bunkhouse" at the DZ, so if you dont mind sleeping on a matress that looks like a small animal was slaughtered on it, and can get there before all the beds are gone, you wil need your own blanket, or sleeping bag. The other options you have is to find someone to stay with who will be able to give you a lift to the DZ, or stay in Sydney somewhere, as there are plenty of us who drive down from the city.----------------------------------------------------------- --+ There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.. --+
 crozby 0 #24 January 17, 2005 QuoteAnd one think to remember with your UK driving licence if you get busted for speeding the police cant give you points, you will get a fine, but no points.....
