tigra 0 #1 January 14, 2005 I've been frequenting an Ixtapa/ Zihuatanejo message board, trying to get some information to help plan my trip next month. (Yeah!) So, I'm reading it last night and there's a thread about Skydive Ixtapa and in the list of responses is a rumor that the operation was shut down last year because of a fatal accident. Obviously, it isn't true but how can I convince these whuffos of that? These people seem to believe that people die skydiving "all the time", so often its not even newsworthy, and its just swept under the rug or something! (Like a skydiving fatality at a major tourist destination ins't going to make the news!) I'm not talking about trying to convince someone that skydiving is "safe", just that this particular rumor about a fatality is false.
PhreeZone 20 #2 January 14, 2005 Point them to www.skydivingfatalities.infoYesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
bumgangster 0 #3 January 15, 2005 point out to these people that people die in car crashes all the time so they better stop driving
tigra 0 #4 January 15, 2005 No, that's really not the point. I have no interest in telling anyone skydiving isn't dangerous. But these people seem to think that a double fatality at a prime tourist destination was somehow hushed up because it was bad for tourism or something! The story is so bizarre! LouDiamond 1 #5 January 15, 2005 You need to counter their jive with better jive. Try starting a post about how the skydiving fatality is just a rumor started up to overshadow the true problem.....A serious outbreak of food poisoning, disease, theft, rapes, murders, abductions(pick your favorite) in the area. "It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
tigra 0 #6 January 15, 2005 I kind of like the site so I don't want to troll! I'm still hoping to find a cheap hotel through them- I don't want their "HH" to ban me before I do! I'm used to whuffo BS, but this one has me scratching my head! Some guy just called me an oxygen deprived bitch (not those exact words, but really close!) for pointing out how quickly word can travel on the internet! I think I just need to walk away from this one and keep searching for my cheap hotel!
cderham 0 #7 January 17, 2005 give us the link. I don't mind getting kicked off a site I care nothing about Chris It's Jimmy Time!! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Team-Fast-As-Fuck/6099474213
tigra 0 #8 January 17, 2005 Well, the thread's pretty much buried and forgotten now although one chick did say some really nasty things after "googling" skydiving accidents. I just thanked her for proving my point! I never wanted to defend the sport, just clarify that nobody died skydiving in Ixtapa last year! It actually gets weirder in that the original "source" of the rumor may have been a skydiver! Talk about twisted! But, its Zihuatanejo.net if you want to look at it or comment! NickDG 23 #9 January 18, 2005 I was teaching an AFF class one day and we were outside doing PLFs when a fatality occurred right in front of us. The DZ stood down to deal with it, and then I re-gathered the class. I told them I'd understand if they didn't want to continue (the deceased was a friend of mine and I didn't feel like continuing) but, I got a funny reaction. They said, "We're alright, are you alright?" I said I was and they decided to continue and during the after jump walk and talk I wondered about them doing that after only being on the DZ a few hours before seeing their first fatality? They almost all said the same thing. "Gee, Nick, doesn't that happen all the time." Your wuffos in Z-town may be thinking of the tandem fatality that occurred in, I think, Chile, some months ago. Another funny thing about wuffos is that over the years I've noticed that a fatality that makes the newspapers is usually accompanied by a jump in student business for that DZ. Go figure . . .
