pyke 0 #54 February 15, 2005 Yup - the boogie was a joke...the organizers are jokers...and after all was said and done...the only people laughing were the skydivers having a good time at the bar!! It was evident, through the grapevine after the events happened, that the organizers were using this boogie to 'gobble up some dough' from the skydiving community. And, under ideal conditions, I would have been happy to contribute. However, perhaps some very good lessons were learned here....and any future Skydive Greensburg boogies will be successful.... BUT GOOD LUCK FINDING ANY SKYDIVERS WILLING TO ATTEND!!! you guys really screwed yourselves with this one. Kahurangi e Mahearangi, Kiwi, RB #926, AFF-I, FAA Snr. NSEMN8R 0 #55 February 15, 2005 QuoteThe hotel pulled the plug on their end but they would not refund my deposit .... ....The other skydivers went leaving those they were going to splip rooms with holding the bag. Sorry about that Chris, but I wasn't going to stay there with no boogie or even a DZ close by. I came there all the way from Michigan and wanted to jump. It'll be a few more months before I get another chance. PM me and let me know how much deposit they screwed you on though. I'll pay my share. We stopped by Labelle and stayed for about 20 minutes. Everyone I talked to there was either bitching about Marco Island or apologizing for it. Kinda seemed like a crappy vibe. Plus, I didn't feel like paying $23/jump into that place and an extra $10 registration fee for nothing. By that time I felt like I'd been screwed enough. So we drove to Clewiston which was right up the road and had a kick ass time. Thanks to everyone @ Clewiston for saving my vacation! You guys rock! blueskyserenity 0 #57 February 15, 2005 I'm glad you got to jump, especially since you came all the way from Michigan. No jumping on Marco that weekend, but did I mention I got married?????? We'll have to do a Marianne & Robby, What Boogie? big way (with me & Robby in the base b/c I want to fall flat and kiss him til breakoff) jump at Dublin. Hey...we should put down a strip of sand in Dublin so I can pretend to land at the beach, but this time for a jumper w/ 60 jumps and a B I will likely land safely!!! I like coconuts. And you're all invited to next year's Marco Island Non-Boogie-Boogie to celebrate our First Anniversary. I'm sure Biminis won't mind having us back again to rack up another 6 or $700 worth of Giant-Ass Margaritas. And that was just a dozen of us. When I think of the cash the island would've pocketed if this boogie had been done at least half-assed! LaBelle is a Cesna 182 DZ. They charge $20 to 10,000 normally. The $10 fee was for a club membership which they waived if you told them you were with the Marco Island Boogie. Don't blame Skydive Greensburg. Bob coordinated this with the town council, FAA, and the hotel. What put the hurt on this before the first jump was the condo boards that didn't want us to begin with because we're noisy. Also some bullshit story about "a parachute knocked a kid into the pool" didn't help. They wanted to shut us down from the start, Bob did his damnedest just to get the jumps off he did. NSEMN8R 0 #61 February 15, 2005 Hey CONGRATULATIONS guys! What a beautiful place to get married! Too bad about the boogie. I would have loved to have been able to celebrate with you guys. Congrats Again! By the way, I didn't see any CASA at Labelle. They wanted $23 for a Caravan. Not sure about the $10. I can't believe so many people went for that when there was another Caravan only about 20 miles away

Bolas 5 #63 February 15, 2005 The Casa was coming from Lake Wales. When they got shut down at the beach, they canceled it. They were barely turning the Caravan at La Belle on Saturday anyways. crutch 0 #65 February 15, 2005 Okay, I have kept my mouth shut long enough, time for me to put my two cents worth in here. One, kudos to Bob Doughty for trying to make this event come off. He was actually caught up in a lot of politics that had nothing to do with skydiving, but that is where the locals decided to fight one another. I think he did an excellent job jumping through all of the hoops that were put in front of him. I think few people realize that until late Wednesday night the permits were an on again off again issue. The final verdict was very restrictive and honestly, I really didn't think we would last the four days, but really thought we could go longer than two loads. Seconds, very large darts to the pilot/spotter combination to the load that created the problem that occured. Some people are pointing fingers at the girl who landed out, she never had a chance to make it to the beach! With the winds blowing off the water at around 15 mph, why you run a jump run inland and get out over land is beyond anything I can think of! Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to cover their ass! I was standing there on the beach hoping it wasn't jumprun, then saw the exit, it was everything my girlfriend could do to keep me calmed down. Stupid, stupid, stupid and in my opinion, those two owe everyone who got screwed at this boogie! The sad thing about all of this, if we could have gone at least a day without an incident, I think what ended up happened might have not caused the shut down if it occured later in the week. Having two hospital visits in four loads doesn't speak well for the jumpers from Indiana. Having only two loads have everyone land in a designated area four football fields in size, doesn't add much either. Kudos for Bob also for making at least something happen at LaBelle. I think the staff there may have been overwhelmed, but all in all it turned out well. Well, that is my two cents worth! Would I go again, in a heartbeat! The people of Marco Island, for the most part, were great! The tandem potential is unbelievable, I think we could have easily done 100 to 150+ tandems once we got rolling. I hope someone in the future trys to make amends and have this happen, but please use a pilot who knows how to spot a load, Mark of Aerohio comes to mind (countless loads in Marathon, no off airport landings). Blue Skies!
RastaRicanAir 0 #66 February 15, 2005 Somewhere out there are a lot of people who's reputations are taking an undefended public beating right now, and I'd rather have the real info than hearsay any day. From what I understand, he was blindsided with it when he got there on Tuesday. He made what happen, happen (as far as getting the permits). He even forked up some more money earlier in the week for added insurance the community leaders wanted. No, I think Bob did everything in his power to make it happen, his pilot and spotter let him down.
chaoskitty 0 #71 February 15, 2005 QuoteKudos for Bob also for making at least something happen at LaBelle. Kudos for what? LaBelle is a drop zone and all Bob did was show up with a bunch of jumpers and a bigger plane, "hey can we jump here??". Sure, why not?? We came to this boogie for beach jumps, and he did not deliver. Sorry Bob, I understand, and its not the end of the world, but no Kudos for you. QuoteBlue Skies! Amen to that! Bolas 5 #72 February 15, 2005 From everything I've heard it wasn't until Bob got down there that the issues started. Basically really old people with alot of $$$$ and nothing better to do decided to stop this at the last minute. As for the spotting issue: I was on that load in the first group as a diver. We got out in just about the same place as we did on load 1. The winds just changed. Soon after that load the winds really picked up and the weather was unjumpable for about 2 days anyways. CSpenceFLY 1 #74 February 15, 2005 There is no doubt in my mind he did everything he could. Not even The Slims in the skydiving community would set out to waste everyones money.I think however it would have been better to explain early on what happened rather than let the rumor mill spin.I have heard at least three sides to this unfortunate fiasco.Somewhere in the middle I believe is the truth. As for the $23 jumps at Labelle,I hope Bob was getting some of that money to offset his loss because that is the only way that is justified.
