Twists in static line deployments are very common, more common than freefall deployments.
I think the reason is that the bag is in a lot of turbulence (from the fuselage, props wings etc) as the canopy deploys (from s/l), there is not a lot that you as a jumper can do to avoid them, arching hard helps a lot.
Freefall deployed twists are mostly due to poor deployment body position, eg dropping a shoulder. Again this is very common for students.

They should'nt be a real big issue as you will probably be jumping a lightly loaded canopy.

You can of course pack some wild twists into the pack job, but again at your level you are unlikely to be able to influence this.....

Nice one on your FIRST jump (have you discovered the beer rules yet...?)

Twists are pretty common on static line jumps, you can expect to get them roughly once every three jumps.

Causes include:

bad body position (which you can do something about - head up, hips forward, stay symmetrical);

the fact that the bag with the canopy in is attached to the aircraft and therefore has a second to spin in the slipstream, putting in twists before the canopy's even out of the bag (you can't do anything about this);

and also the method of packing - usually student kit is packed on its side (flat packing) which puts a 90 degree twist straight in. Again, nothing you can do about this.

Twists are a normal part of being a student, and you know you can kick them out, so just bite the bullet. Once you get onto freefall, and especially once you get your Cat 8, they'll become much less common.

There are two reasons for that to happen: packing method and your position at opening....

When deploying in frefall, that is. As Nacmac said, twists are quite common on sl jumps. Had them on my first jump, too, and was very excited about my first near-death skydiving situation. ;)
As for the cause- I'd say the d-bag spins because it's a)yanked to the side, not directly up and b) it enters the turbulent air behind the plane. Consequently, I would assume that line twists are more common when doing sl with the line attached to the bag than when the line just pulls the ripcord and the pilotchute does the rest.

Yes.
On the other hand, I prefer direct bag because they open so quickly, the student does not have enough time to flip through the lines.
IAD offers equally fast deployments, getting to line stretch long before the clumbsiest student can flip through the lines.

We had a student do this very thing the other week. Direct bad deployment. Ended up with his leg caught in the lines, and him hanging upside down.

He managed to clear himself, and not break anything...[:/]
