Buried 0 #1 April 19, 2005 I'm having a tough time on deciding on whether or not to bring my gear on a three week EU trip covering [at least] Sweden, Denmark and NL.. may stop in Switzerland.... I would like to bring my gear and visit a few dzs for some jumps, but the amount of time that I could account for at the dropzones presently would be like 4 or 6 days.. so about 1/3 - 1/4 the trip. Since I know I won't be staying at some nice hotels for most of the trip. Most likely some hostels, cheap hoteles etc, would it be wise to bring my gear and keep it locked up somewhere for when I'm bumming around the cities I'm in? I'd hate to lug it around. Has anyone done a similar trip? Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?

Andrewwhyte 1 #3 April 19, 2005 If your touring being overloaded will prove a major drag on your enjoyment of your trip. Bring your book, USPA card, and your licence; rent the rest.
Buried 0 #4 April 19, 2005 QuoteWhy is it even a question? 1) it's expensive, dont want it to get damaged or stolen 2) its heavy to lug around everywhere 3) chance I can't get to a dz somewhere at some point Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?
cheneyneel 0 #5 April 19, 2005 Man I have brought my rig on two different trips to Europe.. I will never bring it again unless I am planning a specific event like the Espace boogie or some other major boogie... it is just not worth it, you pay way too much money for jumps and then if you have to sit on the ground because of weather or something then you are just wasting time in Europe with so many other things that you could be doing.. Plus the places I jumped (the bigger DZs) might have been big but they dont seem to have the hard ass line of jumping your ass off.. most that I have visited would take their time getting up in the morining and then shut the whole DZ down for like 2 hours for lunch and drink wine and beer.. take a nap then jump for only a couple of hours in the after noon... I love the life style of most european countries but not when I want to jump.... it seems to have always been dissapointing to me.. if you have a specific event then yes bring it and go jump, but if you are just doing a little more than back packing around then NO dont bring it.. I will never again... I also had gear stolen from me on my last trip there....what are you going to do?huh...
gemini 0 #6 April 19, 2005 And it's still a question, why? I've lugged mine around just on the chance I would get to jump somewhere, sometime. I'm going to work out of state and flying in the client's jet. Bet those pilots will be surprised when I carry my rig on board. Blue skies, Jim

Buried 0 #8 April 19, 2005 yeah I was thinking the same thing after I posted this... If i was going there for a boogie or something I should, but otherwise rent. From what I hear though, their rental gear is generally just student gear and generally 200+ sq ft canopies. Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?
Skyliving_Dave 0 #9 April 19, 2005 Good news dude, that's not (always) true My DZ in the UK has canopies from 288 student kit down to a 135 for hire. I know other DZs in the UK do too, not sure about the rest of Europe though. I'm guessing if you're in Gap, Empuria, Seville etc etc then you'd be fine. Have a good trip! -------------------------------------------------- 'Everybody needs a mate called Dave'
IanHarrop 42 #10 April 19, 2005 Every dropzone has rental gear. Take your log book, your license, and your USPA (or whatever) membership card. Lot's less work and bet's are you'll spend less time arranging for gear when you're there as compared to all of the time you'll put into taking your gear."Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy
sunshine 2 #11 April 19, 2005 Don't bring your gear. Bring me instead. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug!

wmw999 2,461 #13 April 19, 2005 By and large, particularly if you're traveling alone, the lighter the better. Don't bring your gear. You'll regret having it stolen, or missing something cool to do because of it, far more than you'll miss by having to rent.
