Renting at WFFC?

This is probably too hopeful a question, but are there any opportunities to rent gear at the WFFC?

I'm financially irresponsible. Add that to some bad luck with employers over the past few years, and I find myself as a novice A-licensed skydiver with around 90 jumps who doesn't yet have his own rig. I've got some time off available at work, and even an RV I was thinking about taking down, but no rig.

Any opportunities to rent gear for a few days? Better to hold off another year and miss all the fun? Other suggestions? There's also the possibility of Richmond "The" Boogie, but likely still won't have gear before then.

Profile was wrong; I'm not sure how that happened. Thanks for pointing that out. I have 90-some jumps and an A license, spread out over 4 years due to poorly timed job problems, though I'm not sure how that's relevant to my question.

Because inconsistencies like that often indicate a bullshit artist. It is relevant because anyone who sees your post will probably think twice before renting you gear.

Fred, lots of skydivers come with gear they have rented from their own DZ's. (My husband included) There are demo opportunities, and the occasional loan. But try to line something up in advance if possible, it will make your life easier. Come with or without a rig, you will have a blast and meet and see lots of new things!

WFFC is about the worst possible place to be trying new gear for the first time. There is an opening height restriction of about 3000 feet max. 3000 feet on some long spots with very congested airspaces at points don't leave much time to figure out the canopy and to see how it flies and how to safely land it, espcially if you are going to have to land it in town. Traffic has at least 12-14 canopies (Mullins King Air) in the air at the same time and potentially up to 32 canopies (Casa) on the same plane, coming from a small DZ its easy to get overwhelmed even on gear you know very well, on unknown gear its not a good idea to get into something like that.

One thing...for the Safety of others as well as yourself. Demoing gear at WFFC is ok as long as all other skydivers know your intentions ie opening high etc. And above all Checking with the Pilot and brief him or her on intention.

Because of the heavy drop loads during the WFFC you may have to Demo in a non congested area depending on opening ALT and land in a different area. Mine was at the racetrack in Quincy in 2000.

Above all keep Safety in Mind.

thanks for the tip.. i would have not thought of that.. I will make sure to tell the pilot if/ when i am going to open high..

should i open much higher just because its a demo???? I am only going down from a 209 to a 190.. i was planning on opening at 3k same as with the 209.... At least 1 jump at a high alt. would be good so i can play with the canopy.. but most of the jumps on demos i was planning on regular openings..
any comments are apreciated!

You should ALWAYS do clear and pulls or at least open much higher then normal with new gear so that you can learn it. It should would suck to open at 3k only to find that you have to land over at the golf course but have absolutley no clue as to how to approach the very tight landing area since you don't know the canopy.

As of last year they were dropping the CRW jumpers over near the radio tower, you can almost make it back from altitude from there, DO NOT do that. Get a FULL briefing from the manifest on if higher openings are possible. They usually involve a different jumprun then a normal pass and not too many planes make that run. Things at WFFC get crazy fast so take time to learn what is going on before you add too many new factors to it.
