mountainman 0 #1 March 18, 2003 Hey everyone: I am curious if anyone knows how long you should wait after donating plasma before skydiving. Is there even a wait ? They aren't taking any blood from you, they are merely taking out some of its components. They say you can give several times a week and there is a recuperating time of only 48 hours. So, this isn't the same circumstances as donating blood. Anyone have any information on this ? I would almost say the 48 hours would suffice. Ideas ?http://www.brandonandlaura.com
mountainman 0 #2 March 18, 2003 First of all... is the reason we shouldn't skydive right after giving blood is the loss of blood which equals a loss of red blood cells which transport O2 throughout the body ? If so, I found this on the page of the company I may donate through: During the donation process, the plasma component of whole blood is collected through the use of an automated machine, returning saline and the unused blood components, such as red blood cells and platelets, to the donor. So, you will get your red blood cells back, which would mean you have all O2 transporting capabilities. The only thing you may want to wait for is if you get hurt, you won't have all the platelets and other parts of blood you may need if you get hurt. However, the recovery time is only 48 hours. Nice ! Here is the company I may do this through: BioLife Plasma I think this may buy some more jump tickets. LOL If you donate on Monday and Wednesday/Thursday, you will make some cash to jump on Saturday. Woohoo !! http://www.brandonandlaura.com
AggieDave 6 #3 March 18, 2003 Ahhh, donating plasma. I'm in a college town, probably half of our college jumpers donate plasma. Me? I pack parachutes. But anyways, they haven't noticed any problem, but then again, they don't go get on a load right after they donate, either. They usually eat something, drink a lot of water, etc. Beyond that, they haven't had any problems or noticed any hypoxia, etc.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." darkwing 5 #4 March 18, 2003 A flight surgeon could answer this. I'm not one, so my response is as good as anyone elses, but I don't see where there would be a problem. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
mountainman 0 #5 March 18, 2003 Thanks for the info. This was my thought that there would be no ill effects as far as O2 goes. However, if you get a major cut/break, you would have less IN your blood to clot and so forth. Perhaps that is what is to be weighed here... but, there is only a 48 hour recovery. Dave - do you know how much you get paid for one session ? I'm just curious.http://www.brandonandlaura.com
AggieDave 6 #6 March 18, 2003 I think its $25. I know it's $150 a month. Not bad money.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
mountainman 0 #7 March 18, 2003 That is pretty good. If you do it routinely, you can make well over a grand. Not too shabby for something you make automatically. http://www.brandonandlaura.com

ERICCONNELLY 0 #9 March 18, 2003 Another thing to consider. You will have a lower total blood volume. If you drink, your Blood Alcohol Content will be higher after you have donated. Be carefull, don't overdo it.
JohanW 0 #10 March 18, 2003 QuoteDave - do you know how much you get paid for one session ? I'm just curious. It never ceases to amaze me people actually get paid to donate blood in the U.S.. So maybe I can amaze all of you guys. In the Netherlands, donating blood gets you a needle mark and a cup of coffee (or whatever). You get to park the car for free, it costs you an hour and they punch holes in you, and you do it because it's the honourable thing to do, and it doesn't pay a cent. No real shortage of donors, either. (OK, back to the topic.)Johan. I am. I think.
wmw999 2,444 #11 March 18, 2003 Actually, most of the blood donated in the US is also donated for free. You can sell blood products, but the whole blood is pretty much always free. I think we have a shortage of donors because we have such a glut of users. I know the blood drives where I work are almost always oversubscribed. Wendy W. AggieDave 6 #18 March 19, 2003 Donating Plasma pays, since pharmacudical companies pay for that stuff for testing and experiements. Donating blood, actual blood is still a free thing, the most you'll get is a t-shirt during a blood drive.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." mountainman 0 #19 March 19, 2003 I donated blood through the Red Cross 7 times. On the 7th, they found a high liver enzyme count and I will never be able to donate again. Pretty damn stupid, if you ask me. Oh well. Their loss.http://www.brandonandlaura.com

SkyMissy 0 #21 March 23, 2003 Yeah, the term "donate" is used loosely in terms of the plasma market.________________________________________________ Mike

Wow...Here we get 1 soda/beer and a free car transporting us out and home, and the felling of doing somthing good. I would wait atleast 24hour before consider jumping, migth 48hour.But then why not just donat when it wont interupt jumping Stay safe Stefan Faber
fred 0 #23 March 28, 2003 Quoteand a free jump ticket at ZHills. TK has blood drives there frequently. This is interesting. I've got friends at the blood center who might be interested in organizing one at my dropzone. How does it work? Do people donate throughout the day and then get on airplanes shortly after? Or is it an evening thing? Somehow, I feel like donating blood and then jumping out of an airplane later that day is a bad idea.
JohanW 0 #24 March 30, 2003 Quote Quote the most you'll get is a t-shirt during a blood drive. and a free jump ticket at ZHills. TK has blood drives there frequently. I suppose that's donating plasma? As someone else mentioned, I wouldn't feel comfortable donating whole blood and jumping anytime soon. Hey, do I get 30-odd free jumps for the donations I've made over the years that haven't gotten me more than a pluche (sp?) pelican and a coffee mug (and a warm fuzzy feeling inside )?Johan. I am. I think.
Stacy 0 #25 March 31, 2003 I"m not sure how it works exactly. I can't give blood due to tattoos in the last year, I just know the bloodmobile is there every so often (during the day) and jumpers who donate get a free jump ticket. I imagine it is for use the following day or at a later date. The next one is on APril 19 and details from the ZHills calendar are as follows: 19 - BloodNet USA Blood drive at Skydive City. 1-8pm. Donate and get a free jump ticket for your effort. Also a cool "Skydiving/Blood donor" t-shirt. I imagine manifest has more information.
