Does anyone have any info on the Jet?

Recommended Posts

I noticed that on the Perris web-site it says the jet will be at Rantoul, but it's not listed on the WFFC site.

I know Don is probably pretty leary about announcing it untill he 100% sure because of what happened a couple of other years and i understand that. I just wondered if anyone else has heard any info.

ok, so now am i going to be pacing the floor, giddy with anticipation :o

i may have to change my summer boogie schedule...

Oh no, don't do that, i'm just asking because of what is posted on the Perris web-site.;)

I have heard no offical statement released from Rumor Control yet.:)
BTW, do you happen to know what type of jet it is that Perris has, i know it's not the 727.

Oh, here we go again. If you really want to jump a jet, the best bet is to join the Army and go to Airborne School, then you might get to jump a C-141 if you're lucky. I'll believe they'll have a jumpable jet at WFFC when I see video of it on jump run, not a moment sooner.

BTW, I believe the Perris jet is a DC-9 and it will probably be at WFFC. They flew it out there last year. I understand it did very well for transportation purposes, but no jumpy.

If you wait 'til the last minute, it'll only take a minute.

Here is the most recent info, freshness date, yesterday.
We are still waiting for the FAA's confirmation flights.
looks like there will be a minimum of two of them.
It is looking VERY good at this point, but remember I said we are still awaiting confirmation.
If you guys are afraid to pre-register based on that, well, I understand.
BTW, it's being fitted with a fixed camera that will be dedicated to exit shots on each jump. How cool is THAT?

I know that the jet hasn't been to the Convention every year they've tried to bring it, but over the years of attending WFFC I had the great fun of Jumping the Jet 7 or 8 loads, and jumped it at least 1 load each year they had a jet. Even made it on the first load ever (2nd pass). What a fabulous experience, hearing everybody chanting "D.B....D.B" for D.B. Cooper as the cargo hatch started closing up prior to take-off. And the guy dressed up in a suit (with a rig) carrying a briefcase with "money" sticking out the sides! There's no other boogie that has provided this kind of opportunity, and I wish it were more recognized what a job Don Kirlin did in making that happen. But after several disappointments, I seem to recall Don Kirlin saying that he wasn't sure there'd ever be another skydive from a big jet, unless a skydiving operation bought the jet. The insurance companies have backed away from providing coverage. If the Perris jet completes FAA approvals and can make it to WFFC as a JUMP Jet, that would be great! Let's hope it works out, but remember, there's a big family of skydivers, great organizers, and a lot of other aircraft ready to turn out fun jumps whether or not the Jet becomes reality again. Blue skies!

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'll be sure to pass them along to Don. I think it's a shame that people have a tendency to crucify him about the jet when he is the ONLY one who has EVER brought a jet for the general populace to jump from. People seem to remember the bad, and not the good.
The feeling that the jet was the ONLY reason to come to the convention when it may be one of twenty jumpships on a given day, has really had a detrimental effect on the entire staff. Every one of the 150 to 300 people who volunteer their time every year spends time reading all of the posts and when they feel that their hard work is being bashed simply because one of the fleet didn't show, well it can be depressing.
The simple fact is, if people want an organizer who will continue to attempt to talk other plane operators into using unique and exciting jumpships that haven't flown skydivers before, then they need to support the Convention.
Don was the one who brought us such tremdous opportunities as Rod Tinney, Mr. Douglas, Several DC 3's, Twin Beech, Fat Annie.
Most of these were eventually seen at other boogies AFTER they were used at the Convention, and the operators learned that it could be profitable, and that they were safe to jump from.
Don has stuck his neck out more than once, and I have seen him write great big fat checks to cover the expenses that we all run up having this terrific party every year. The reason the Convention looks like a million bucks is because that's about what it costs to put it on. Doesn't always make a million bucks, but hey, it's Don's party!
Like he says, "I can tell anybody how to make a small fortune in skydving,,,,,first you start out with a LARGE fortune!"

It's hard to feel sorry for a man who owns his own aircraft. One being a Mig if I remember correctly. ;)

IMO - WFFC went to hell when they started allowing the locals in.

Cheers.

Since i live an hour from Rantoul...i'm waiting for a phone call. When someone confirms jumps are indeed being made out of the jet, then i will hop in my car and go to WFFC. :)

>We agree, so we try very hard to only allow in the locals if there has been some trade in time (volunteering TONS of hours) or trade in goods. We figure that way, they are people who are also interested in seeing the Convention's continued success.

I would probably agree, if it was a Mig. But it isn't, and it costs about 1/4 of the price of an Otter.

Are you saying he does'nt own a Mig?
If you are, i beg to differ.

Not only that, but if you think he only owns one L-39, you're only off by a factor of 20 or so.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

Don had a Mig which crashed a couple years ago, killing one of his good friends. I do not know for a fact he has replaced it, but I'd say there is a better than average chance he has.

He also imports/refurbishes L-39s for sale here. When I won a ride in one at the last Quincy WFFC I had the opportunity to go into the hanger where the work is done. I counted no less than 6 in various stages on the floor and saw at least another dozen and a half in crates.

That enough typing for you?

If not, read this or look at these search results and decide who wins the bet.

BTW, your reading comprehension needs some work -- my name is not ICEMAN, and I'm not the one who has to bet against Skymonkey13.

See you when you post after a week has passed, whoever the doubter was.

Sorry, my reading needs no work, the j with the underline looks like an I.

Anyway, have re read your post, and am just confused now, you are betting that he does not own a mig.

You words to skymonkey were that 'not only that', when he asked if you were saying that he does not own a mig.
The ne you went to say that he owned 20 or so L-39's.

I am going to walk away from this not knowing where this has just gone.
