Im guessing someone inspected the main after the chop, if so, was the canopy definately not to blame?
skybytch 273 #4 January 19, 2003 Were they both on the same canopy? Has a rigger looked at the line trim on the canopy(s) that mal'ed?
riggerrob 643 #5 January 19, 2003 I wonder if you have been side packing. If you side pack, one end cell inflates before the rest of the canopy. This results in the lines on that side of the canopy wearing out before the rest of the lines. Over time that one end cell will slowly stretch out of trim and openings will slowly get weirder and weirder. I only expect the lines on a tandem main to last 300 jumps. If you make more than 300 jumps on a SET 400 openings get weird and they don't flare very well.

floormonkey 0 #7 January 22, 2003 You should also watch your brake lines. We had a rash of tandem mals due to our packers not untwisting the brake lines. most were slider up, all were tension knots above the slider. When I made sure they were untwisting the brake lines regularly, the mals pretty much stopped.

jerm 0 #10 January 25, 2003 that all depends, if you tandem roll the nose and turn it under you get more symtrical openings than rolling it all in one driection -- it's more PRO than side... YMMV, but side packing isn't as simple as pointing it 90 off heading Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
