Going to Eloy DZ

Hi All,

I'm headed out to Arizona to visit family and I thought I would take the opportunity to get myself over to the Eloy DZ to do a jump or two. Anything I need to know? I usually jump at the Parachute Center in Lodi, California.

Will you have your A license by then? If you won't, your best bet would be to start by calling the school at Eloy to talk about what they'd require from you as a visiting student.

I could be wrong in how I heard it, but Larry Hill did say that you must have an A license to visit during an interview at PIA. I'd imagine they do have a program for hire if you're a visiting student, but it's also likely not cheap.
great place, you'll enjoy it even if you don't jump. but it's more fun if you do.

Good idea.

Going to another dropzone, especially a well
done one like Eloy, really enriches your viewpoint
and understanding.

Plus they have a wind tunnel.

If they have you do something differently than
you learned at Bill's, ask them why. There is
more than one right way to do a lot of things,
and both places probably have good reasons
for the way they chose.

did yu get your A license already?
try to contact them and check if they will let you have coaching jumps with one of their instructors....doesn't hurt to ask

They do tandems and AFF and post AFF and on up
to leading edge people in every kind of activity with
zillions of jumps, so I don't know why you couldn't
jump. There may be some restriction during boogies,
I'm not sure.

With low jump numbers they will want to supervise
you enough for them to feel sure you are not going
to hurt yourself.

But really, all you want to do jumpwise is go through
the whole process at a new place for the experience.

When I go to a new dropzone I look at the aerial map
and go outside and watch people and jump runs and
traffic patterns and just kind of tune in.

Then I go up and jump out and don't do anything,
just look around, like:

"OK, there's the two grassy areas, and that's the
hangar with the manifest, and the wind socks are
there, there, and there, even though I can't see
them from way up here, and when we took off
the wind was going like this, so the landing patterns
are like that, and ... "

If you go to http://maps.google.com/
and put in 'eloy arizona' and go to the "hybrid"
view you will see the airport northwest of town.

Then you can zoom in pretty close and look around.

jump stories.

Yep. That's what i would do first - check the aerial map, watch some jumpers....then give it a go

I'm in Tucson right now so we'll see. I'll have my A before long so I'll jump next time I come out if I don't get to this time.

I doubt they'll let you jump without one of their instructors if you don't have the A yet. But I'd bet they'd be happy to let you fly in the tunnel.

I'd go even further and say that it's a bad idea not to ask.

It'll suck royally if you get there and find out that they would have been happy for you to jump if you'd just brought X along with you, but you didn't know and therefore didn't bring it. Even once you get your licence, it's still a good idea to call ahead, just so you know what to expect and what they expect you to have when you arrive.

Eloy is definitely not the place to go as a student....unless you like an unfriendly gear store and $180 coach fees per jump....prepare to get RAPED!

I went through AFF at Eloy (Levels 4-7) during the Holiday Boogie 2003 and had a great experience. Some jumpers advised me to not do AFF during a Boogie because of increased canopy "traffic", but I was on a ginormous canopy, last one down and landed in the alternate landing area and did fine. My instructors were Tim Strauss, Greg Foster, and Ron (forgot her last name) and they were all awesome instructors!

Okay. So I went to the Eloy DZ on Sunday. Much bigger than my home DZ. More expensive. More crowded, bigger operation. Kinda get lost in the crowd. I didn't plan on jumping after everything I heard. Anyway, I checked the place out and watched the "show" for quite a while. It was fun to watch so many skilled skydivers in one place. The landings were FAST and pretty amazing.

I also went to Marana on Monday. Much more like my home DZ. A couple of groups of jumpers were practicing accuracy landings (is that what it is called?) for an upcoming competition at Eloy.

Both places were interesting and I would like to jump at both of them. On my next trip to Tucson to visit my dad in the summer I'll give it a go.
