Sonic 0 #26 November 30, 2002 QuoteBuy PD chutes I disagree - PD make good gear, but they are not the only canopies that fly.----------------------------------- It's like something out of that twilighty show about that zone

Deuce 1 #32 December 1, 2002 You'll get opinions here. That's all they are, no different from the opinions of your DZ staff. I have learned over the years when to fight and when to get along. If you are stuck at a DZ where all the staff is brand loyal to whatever, and the whatever isn't uncomfortable or dangerous, you might consider going along. Whether it's Cobalt vs. PD, Mirage vs. Wings, if the staff will treat you better and teach you because they are snobby about what gear to get, you may consider getting that gear. You will need their input about lots of stuff as you progress. So even if your staff is ill-informed, and considers that everything other than "their" brand is a deathtrap, taking their advice about brand might make your life easier. They are wrong, though, because almost all the available gear (all of it, as far as I know) is safe and reliable. That said, if I was teaching you to shoot pistol, I would recommend a Glock because I'm a Glock armorer. If you get a Kimber and it malfunctions, I'm limited in how much I can help you. If you want feedback about canopy control I can tell you about flying a Spectre (and about crashing one) if you get a nine-cell my input won't be as valuable because I have almost no 9 cell experience. Good luck! I tell you, Square One is the place at Perris cause you can rent and demo just about everything and choose based on what is comfortable and effective for you. Chow! cobaltdan 0 #33 December 1, 2002 just thought i would point out that there are an increasing amount of dropzones that are training students on modern "elliptical" canopies. there are a plurality of elliptical canopies specificaly designed to have suitable flying traits for begineers. safe loadings for students range from .8-to 1.2 depending on the design and what measuring method the manufacturers uses to determine area. we noticed a gap in available canopies for student training quite a while ago, and have just finished testing on a 220-240 cobalt. sincerely, dan<><> www.extremefly.comDaniel Preston <><> atairaerodynamics.com (sport) atairaerospace.com (military)
drenaline 0 #34 December 2, 2002 Whateva canopy you choose please make sure you get a proper wingload for your skills, for that you should ask a skilled canopy pilot or you instructor to see you fly. Answers can vary from bad, so-so, newbie, good and excelent (if you get excelent take it with a grain of salt and ask somebody else). Once you know what wingload you will need you will be a step closer to choosing canopy size.
