Where to put a Hook knife

I just get a hook knife and there is no pouch with it.
So I start thinking to put it directly on my Rig. I have some concerns about putting the hook knife directly on the rig. For example lots of people have it below the 3 ring system. I'm afraid that at this place the hook knife cut depends of the side the cutaway cables or the reserve cable. So my second thought was at the legstrap, but I'm not sure if it's a good place again.
Do anybody have any advice or experience about that, don't hesitate to give your input.

what kind of rig and how old?

what kind of knife? jack the ripper? small round Alumminum?

best place for jack the ripper is jumpsuit in the leg like tonysuits do. Can't talk about the others cause I have no idea, try posting it in the crew forum they use alot of knifes.

I have had no problems with the following mounts:

Leg for ripper
Left mudflap for small aluminum knife
Altimeter pillow for small alum. knife

I have never seen anyone accidentally cut anything with their knife by taking it out of its sheath, said sheath being mounted anywhere on their rig. I have seen two accidental cuts:

1. Someone was "spinning" their knife on their finger and accidentally nicked someone else's chest strap (had to be replaced)

2. A knife came loose on opening, flew up into the canopy, and cut three lines as it spun away

Chest strap is an easy slot...
tips
If the knife is below your waist, mount it so that you pull towards your face.
If its mounted above your waist, mount it so you pull it away from your face....

The ergonimics work best and it might save your nose, lips, ears, etc from ....

Depends on the rig - I have mine under the right mudflap. Have a word with your rigger and see where he/she suggest is suitable.

I make my own pouch for Jack the Ripper's and tack it to the back of my chest mount altimeter. It extends down below the pillow, opening down, along the sternum. It helps keep the altimeter pillow from flipping down, is never in the way, and is accesible with both hands.

For cheap "disposable" hook knifes if you want extra Tractor Supply Company (TSC) sells a knife the size and shape of a ripper for about $4.00. The blades aren't replaceable and it's more flexible but it works for a second or third knife or to loan to someone without. It's sold to cut ear tags off of livestock.

mirage comes standard with a leg pocket and snap for that knife. obviously you dont' have that, but a rigger should be able to put one on, I have found them easy to get to there (on the leg)

I have that kind of knife, and I bet I know why it flew off -- cause the pouch that comes with it is crap! The knife is loosely held in there with one little dab of velcro. I need to fix it. (Otherwise, I like the knife.)

I have an AL hook knife from square one. It uses a snap to hold it in place. I keep it on my left legstrap. No problems. Careful putting a hook knife in the Mirage pocket, Skycat lost hers out of that pocket. If you need a pouch, I can build one complete w/ snap closure.

Also, some advice that I took to heart was to put a cardboard (thin kind) or paper plate sleeve in the pocket. The knife will come out easier and won't catch on the pocket. It would suck to break your knife or foul the blade when you really need it.

I have an aluminum one on each legstrap and put a third on my chest strap w/ wrist altimeter during CRW. I also twist the loop to the snap so the strap bends out a bit instead of just lying flat. Easier to grab, especially with gloves on.

My guess is Paragear would sell you extra pouchs even though they don't list them. And they're in Skokie.

I carry 2 knives... my main is a Jack on my jumpsuit,right thigh,.. my reserve is a little finger loop type on the left of my chest strap. I have that mounted for a pull-down extraction 'cos I have seen a nostril sliced by one !

I HAD my hook knife on my chest strap. It was in a pouch and mounted upside down since I thought it would be easier to pull it down and out in an emergency. Well, earlier this summer I was loosening my chest strap after opening and instead of just pulling on chest strap I pulled the snap that kept my hook knife in and it fell right out. DOH! Thank God it didn't hurt anyone on the ground! If you do decide to put it on your chest strap, keep it rightside up!

There was an older jumper at my dropzone in Arkansas that told me this story about his hook knife (can't state for sure if it is true but I believed him). He had the knife on his leg strap and 'dummy' corded with a long string. It came out of the pouch during freefall without him noticing and began to float around on the string above him. When he threw his PC the bridle went up into the knife and the PC was cut off. I think he said that his main deployed anyway. Kind of a fluke but something to think about. Makes for a good story anyway.

I published articles about hook knives back in the 1980s (Canpara) and the 1990s (Skydiving), see if you can find the old issues.
Jack the Ripper knives may be cheap, but their sheaths are %$#@!. At a minimum install a stiffener in the stock sheath, so that the blades don't chew on each other.
But you would be wiser to buy an aluminum knife made in Perris or Elsinore.
Also listen to the CReW Dogs, most of whom mount knives near their chest straps or 3-Ring covers.
kmcguffee has a good point, don't tie anything to yourself with a long lanyard. For example, a buddy of mine went in on a demo because they lanyard from his smoke grenade was trailing behind him in freefall.
