voilsb 1 #1 January 26, 2009 In the next couple of weeks I'm moving near Baytown, TX. I'm considering the Pasadena / Deer Park area. In typical traffic, how far are those areas (Pasadena, and Baytown) from Spaceland? What about Ground Rush Skydiving? I understand they're in a temporary location right now. Also, what about finding a decent place to live in that area? Any tips? See you in the skies! BrianBrian
BartRN 0 #2 January 26, 2009 Baytown.... You are probably about 30-35 minutes from Spaceland.. not sure about Ground Rush, have never jumped there. You will be about an hour from Skydive Houston. If you want PM me your contact info amd I will forward it on to some people I know that live in that area for advise on areas. Some canopies can be fun to fly, but treat you like their bitch on opening. -- Jarno
voilsb 1 #3 January 27, 2009 Cool, I was afraid traffic would make the drive a lot worse. I've heard horror stories about Houston-area traffic.Brian

countzero 7 #5 January 27, 2009 QuoteCool, I was afraid traffic would make the drive a lot worse. I've heard horror stories about Houston-area traffic. traffic nightmares are pretty much weekday occurences. weekends it's farily easy to get around quick, aside from the lost load of whatever that didn't get tied down and is now blocking 3 lanes. learning the side streets can help tons.diamonds are a dawgs best friend
NWernig 0 #6 January 28, 2009 Like the industrial look????Traffic only sucks trying to go into town from 6 am- 1pm and out of town from 2pm- 8pm. Other than that its good.On a good note, from that area the traffic to the DZ will not be bad. Nathan
voilsb 1 #7 January 28, 2009 The industrial look? What do you mean? For anybody: Anyways, I've got a mashup of potential homes in a google map. Any opinions or recommendations for it?Brian
JohnRich 4 #8 January 28, 2009 QuoteThe industrial look? What do you mean? Baytown is home to numerous chemical and refinery plants, and is generally considered to have a bad odor in the air because of that. There seems to be an industrial accident of some type about once a year in that area, sometimes spewing toxic chemicals into the air, sometimes causing evacuations. Welcome to Baytown! Well, I don't have a choice for Baytown. Where I live I have some choice in, but I have to work in Baytown.Brian
wmw999 2,452 #10 January 28, 2009 Pay attention to how high the house is above sea level (flooding), and where the prevailing winds (generally from the west) will carry smells. Baytown has pretty good property values I believe (i.e. not too much money can get you a lot of house). Also see how accessible you are to a major road. Deer Park has better schools than Baytown I believe (more refinery school taxes), but it's farther away from Houston and the various DZs. voilsb 1 #11 January 28, 2009 Thanks for the advice. I don't have kids or anything, so I don't much care about the schools; except better schools imply better neighbors. Thanks :)Brian
JohnRich 4 #12 January 29, 2009 QuoteThanks for the advice. I don't have kids or anything, so I don't much care about the schools... School property taxes are significant here, since we don't have a state income tax. Rates can very quite a bit in different school districts. Those are called "ISD's" here - Independent School Districts. And that can add or subtract a bunch of money from a monthly mortgage payment.
Brains 2 #13 January 30, 2009 Im not from the area but have some good family friends that live off of Bayou Blvd near E. Cedar Bayou Lynchburg. Their area is right on Cedar Bayou but on a hill so it doesn't flood, well maybe once Never look down on someone, unless they are going down on you.
