Airhead 0 #1 September 29, 2002 HOW IS TRAINING GOING FOR YOU??? I did AFP jumps #4 AND #5 yesterday! Different instructor though that the other 3 AFP jumps. I didn't feel as secure for some reason and had some difficulties: On 1st jump yesterday, AFP#4: Got really anxious on the long Cessna ride to Altitude, was beginning to feel nausious(spelling?) and actually felt the blood begin to drain from my face! For the first time I wanted to back out!....But JM taked me into going through with it. Jump went ok...But I'm wobbly in the sky yet. Under chute was ok. Landing seemed fast and I PLF'd in and rolled a bit. But otherwise was ok. 2nd jump yesterday, AFP #5: NOT nervous going up, but delayed jumping off the platform over the wheel- got help off with a little nudge! Everything went ok, but I'm really surprised by the challenge of smoothly moving my body in the air!!! Under chute: surprised by being off expected Play location! Messed up my landing approach and got lectured later for not setting up right. Landed faster this time...and PLF'd again- but harder ! But am ok... Problem was the winds changed, and I had not thought through well enough how to vary set up landing approaches. I will really need to learn how to do that while I am in the air if the need arises. I was just really intent on what I had in mind already. I did have a radio guy, but had trouble understanding what he wanted me to do... Sorry to say I was looking at the ground and things on the ground more than concentrating on his instrcutions. Although I am learning A LOT, I am frusterated. So much to learn through more experience! Landings are still big time problematic for me... Thankfully, my instructors and other jumpers are encouraging, or yesterday would have been a BUMMER. I do so want to understand and apply what I need to get it right and NOT GET HURT...and HAVE MORE ANY IN PUT THAT MIGHT BE HELPFUL HERE? Thanx... From talking to other students or recent graduates at my dropzone, I've pretty much figured out that certain skills come more easily to some people than to others, and this isn't a big deal---just be patient and persistant and listen to the advice of your jumpmasters. I know it's sometimes easier said than done, but really try to relax when you jump and remember to have fun
 Ruffles 0 #3 September 30, 2002 I felt your pain my friend. I'm only recently off AFF and I remember those jumps well. I became pale, cool, and sweaty more than once, prior to exit. All that means is that you actually have some whuffo survival instincts left that are telling you they don't like you jumping out of planes. They will subside with each successive jump. I didn't even really decide that I liked this sport until jump 15. As for the "wobbling" during free-fall, I did that so many times they started calling me "Ruffles" (potato chips) as that wobbling is also known as "potato-chipping". That will stop as soon as you RELAX. I didn't believe it, but it's all due to you tensing your arms, torso, and legs during FF. As a matter of fact, if you want to make the rest of your AFFs a piece of cake, relaxing seems to make all the maneuvers you have to do really easy. Unfortunately it took me an extra AFF 5 before I learned that. On AFF 5 I started a left turn which turned into a flat spin at about 80 RPM. My instructor had to grab me and stop me. Hang in there partner, those first ten jumps are the real hurdle. It will get easier, I promise. Unless, of course, you get more and more tense with each jump.
 Squeak 17 #4 September 30, 2002 I'm about to do AFF 5 and more control I am given the more freaked it makes me, which in turn hightens the buzz. Lets face it if it didn't get your adenilin going you wouldn't be doing it. I relatio to your landings, i read a few posts here that talk about radio asistance, but nothing about physical TA asisstance. My DZ had a break in and lost all their radios so my last 3 jumps have been on visuals only. I find that when I'm focussed on what my TA is doing it's easier to glide in and land. Mind you this comment is made from the massive ammount of 4 jumps I have done, so puhaps sofar I've just been dead lucky. You are not now, nor will you ever be, good enough to not die in this sport (Sparky) My Life ROCKS! How's yours doing?
 Airhead 0 #5 September 30, 2002 You really have some GREAT IDEAS!! Especially about the journal of my jumps, etc., and also about drawing out a aerial diagram of the dropzone to go over & practice for different landing setups for different wind directions. Thanx! I'll bring this up with my JMs.
 Airhead 0 #6 September 30, 2002 HAHAHA...Yeah, I think you are absoutely right about my whuffo-survival-reflexes rearing their ugly heads! Yeah, I'm sure that when I can REALLY relax, I'll have a major break threw in my ablitiy to move my body in the air...and to enjoy
 richcomm 0 #7 October 14, 2002 I had to do aff 4 over because I couldn't hold a heading and my altitude awareness sucked...oh and i kicked and dearched on exit!!! I wasn't "relaxed". The next jump (number 4 again) my instructor would'nt give me the ok to start the count until i was smiling I nailed the jump and the only thing she said was don't scream "wooohooo!!" until the canopy is fully inflated. that was my second favorite jump(cutaway was my first favorite) "some stupid quote"
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
