Yup, that's exactly what I've done. Had one in my old Vector and got one on my new Atom as well.

back to the original thread...sorry guys....this actually happened to me on a jump not too long ago. I dumped in a track (I know, I know..) had some line twists...I kicked them out, was flying straight, so I collapsed the slider, and took off my booties, then went to do my flight control check. Next thing I know I have toggles in both hands, but only one is attatched to anything. I guess somehow the loop flipped over the top ofg the toggle, and detatched itself (now fixed by my rigger looping it the other way.) Anyhow, the thought of chopping did indeed cross my mind, but I decided to try and land it. Everything finished without incident, so I walked into the loft, found Hutch, and said "you're a master rigger, so you probably know some stuff about canopies, right?" "Yeah..." says he. I say "ok, well, is this supposed to be attatched to something?" he looks, figures out what happened, takes the toggle from me, and says "naaw." and throws it somewhere behind him.

"But not for students?"
Logic being, students won't know what to do in the event of line cutting being required...eg reserve lineover. Whereas, as soon as a jumper is off student status, they magically acquire this knowledge, often without any brief whatsoever!
I don't make the rules Erno, if I did, there wouldn't be any!

"My question is if you had a broken steering line on your current canopy, would you try to land it, or cut away? And what is your wingload? Elliptical or square?"
Chop. That's why I paid several hundred dollars for that PD-160R, might as well get the mileage out of it and keep the rigger in business.

I don't see anything wrong with people having hook knives, as long as they are told it for the RESERVE, not the main. I don't have one, because I have been too lazy to get my lazy butt on the web site and order a shur-cut.

It would depend on 2 things for me. if I'm near or above 1800, it's gone. If I'm around or above 2500 which is more likely for me, I'd see if it passed the control checks using risers before cutting it. Below 1500, I'd probably make the best of it and ride it in regardless..
All of this is theory since I haven't had a line break yet tho..
Oh, I forgot. Omega 180 loaded at 1.2

On jump #134 I had a hard opening and both steering lines were broken. I had never praticed rear risers and was not feeling the greatest from the opening. I chopped, I was jumping a triathlon at 1.25 wing loading. I have seen practiced with the rear risers and would probably land my Heatwave loaded at 1.33 with them.

QuoteI can land my Hornet 210 loaded at 1.26 with the rear risers.I've practiced this many times at altitude to get a feel for it,the hornet at this loading is very responsive to the rear risers for turns, landing and extending my glide path on a long spot.I do however find the front riser pressure to be a little heavy.
You made the right decisions at the right time, dwell on this experince only long enough to learn from it. Remember "WHEN IN DOUBT,WHIP IT OUT!"
Well I can back you on all of those statements,I have a hornet 135 @ 1.18 and all of what you said seems to be true.. very responsive with rear risers...

I did it on my last canopy - a Triathlon 220 loaded at 1.15 :1. Nice docile canopy even when I had a hard opening resulting in a broken a-b line between the 2nd and 3rd cells on the right side and the right side brake line. I played with my rear risers a bit and decided to keep it. It was touchy but controllable. I didn't realize at the time my a-b line was broken - I thought it was just the brake line. I was very lucky - there were light steady winds at Byron that day and I landed softly on my butt. The canopy collapsed upon attempting to flare. Be very careful when using your rear risers. If you use them like toggles, you can easily collapse your canopy. Also, make sure it is only your brake line that is broken... Just imagine if I made a harder control input up a couple of hundred feet.... I shudder just thinking about it...

I had to land with rear risers due to a low pull
My toggles got caught up in slider as I was trying to maneuver for an off landing.
Crossfire loaded @ 1.5.
tried it a couple of weeks after that just to make sure I could do it again. no prob.
I guess that means I wouldn't chop.
