caseyusa 0 #1 September 20, 2002 Hey everyone, question for ya... Say some cool college student wanted to skydive into his graduation ceremony? This fellow- though mildly crazy , is not an idiot and wouldn't leap unless his Jiminy Cricket conscience told him it was a-OK. Safety first, then fun- yadda yadda... If its too windy or not friendly blue skies it's a no go, of course. Its like a lofty goal, but its fun to think about- and look into early, ya know? So any suggestions? C license? D for "demo"? It'd be in a big field(4-5 soccer fields) on a hill surround by trees... Any ideas? Breaking any laws? Gonna get slapped by the USPA? Waivers? Forms? Demo stuff? I await your wisdom!! _Casey --- ** Blue Skies, Yellow Mustard. ** It's like a farmer, out-standing in his field.
skybytch 273 #2 September 20, 2002 PRO rated would be my guess... Don't do it if you can't do it legally. FAA types read newspapers too, and a bandit jump into a college graduation would be very newsworthy... and make skydiving as a sport and skydivers in general look really bad. Doing it legally will require at a minimum permission from the school, the landowner (if it's not the school), and the FAA.
caseyusa 0 #3 September 20, 2002 true- wouldn't want to give skydiving a bad name. but damn it would be COOL. --- ** Blue Skies, Yellow Mustard. ** It's like a farmer, out-standing in his field.
steve1 5 #4 September 20, 2002 I remember when B.J.Worth graduated from college in Missoula, Mt., he jumped into his graduation wearing his cap and gown. Sounds like a cool thing to try. Steve1
RichM 0 #5 September 20, 2002 I've been on 2 such loads here in the UK, although I'm way too old to be graduating It's an extremely cool thing to do, followed by a major piss up of course ! Ours needed to be setup as a demo jump with the BPA by a demo leader, written permission from landowner and Uni, and Police notification. All participating jumpers had to have the relevant demo rating for the landing area. Local DZ hired us a Turbolet 410 for a reasonable(ish) amount. And we all needed a calming down briefing prior to take off - its a very buzzy thing to do. Just remember you are a skydiving ambassador to the public. Don't swoop it into the creche section of the crowd. Stupid comment but tyhe adrenaline sure makes you want to show and it isn't the place or time to do it. These are some of the most kick ass dives I've done. Get out there and have fun Rich M
PhreeZone 20 #6 September 20, 2002 Based on the 11 on your profile... only about another 490 till that Demo licence... I'd seriously wait to get the demo licence since you have to file NOTAM's learn about WDI's how to lease an airplane/pilot, perfect the accuracy thing (10 stand ups in a 1 meter circle 10 times striaght on the same size canopy as the demo)Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
billvon 2,991 #7 September 20, 2002 >So any suggestions? C license? D for "demo"? As Lisa said, PRO rating. Demos are orders of magnitude more difficult than normal jumps. Even if the area is wide open, the winds are different, the outs are different, the area is generally not well controlled, and demo fever is a big problem. I know of a lot of people who have gotten bit by it and seriously screwed themselves up. >Any ideas? Breaking any laws? Gonna get slapped by the USPA? > Waivers? Forms? Demo stuff? Yes, waivers and NOTAMs. The best advice I can give you is to find a demo team, do ground crew for them a while, learn what goes into one, then do a simple demo with them (i.e. onto an open unpopulated area like a beach.) If everything goes well, consider getting your PRO.
Sinkster 0 #8 September 20, 2002 I hear u man. I want to make a bandit jump onto campus too (i grad this december) b/c I know that the odds of doing it safely due to a huge landing area and a big flag are very high. But I'm not going to b/c like everyone is saying it wouldn't be legal and it could hurt skydiving or make my pilot friend (also college student) who was gonna fly me (heh) be grounded for life. So it's a no go unfortunately. Maybe 20 years ago it would have been more kosher. But I still wish I could do it! If it wasn't for the silly radar we might have been able to pull it off though. With a full face and a ground crew we could have split before the authorities showed up and no one would know who the mysterious bandit jumper was. (part of the act would have been planting a jolly roger flag after landing before running off) hehehehe (but since i said something it aint gonna happen and if it does someone got the idea from this message and it was a copycat)
steve1 5 #9 September 20, 2002 Things are certainly stricter now. We used to jump into our old campus oval all the time. (About 30 years ago). It was fairly tight and almost no outs, and most of us didn't even have a license. In fact I made my 100th jump into it. Today to make this same jump, (I think) you have to have a PRO rating.
