KevinP 0 #1 January 4, 2011 Hi all, As I have mentioned, I'm going to be stationed in Hawaii with arrival in May. At that point, I am going to aggressively pursue my license at the mentioned DZ. Is anyone here a regular there? ThanksSincerely, Kevin
PhreeZone 20 #2 January 4, 2011 There are two DZ's at the same airport, Pacific Skydive and Skydive Hawaii. Lots of forum regulars jump at both places so make sure to check both of them out. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
KevinP 0 #3 January 4, 2011 I appreciate the input. The reason I had decided on PSD was because the SDH website doesn't seem to be as clear-cut regarding their student program and I can't get any clarification via email. The default response is "drop by the DZ when you get here." I understand that they are probably busy, but it takes only a few minutes to send some better info. Maybe someone who is up to speed on both will chime in and help with comparisons and general info. Thanks again.Sincerely, Kevin
BlueSBDeath 2 #4 January 4, 2011 Kevin, What do you want to know, we will do our best to give you information from both DZ's. You may PM me and I can give you a phone number if you want to talk or any of us Hawaii locals will answer your questions about each operation. Aloha!!! HALO1 0 #5 January 5, 2011 Kevin – Arvil and I are both regulars at Pacific. Additionally, we are both military jumpers as well… MFF and Static line. If you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to contact either of us. BTW, just got a brand new Grand Caravan to go along with King Air… 14K in mere minutes. Don't be sexist… Broads hate that. KevinP 0 #6 January 5, 2011 Aloha Arvil and HALO1!! The biggest question I have regarding PSD is that there are two different prices/packages. For instance, http://www.pacific-skydiving.com/aff_pricing.htm has two tandems and four student-piloted for $990 and http://www.pacific-skydiving.com/students.htm has two tandems and three student-piloted for $1234. Now, in the grand scheme, the difference isn't a show-stopper, but for planning purposes, which should I reference? Each states that I'm required three coached jumps within the remainder to get my license. What would be the cost of those coached jumps. Also, what could I consider a range for gear rental? Money will not be an issue, per se, but is always a consideration, and I need an idea of what to earmark. Lastly, as I have seen on youtube, that there are videos taken of many AFF jumps at all levels. Is that the case and, if so, are those videos made available to the student? Mahalo!! (I'm practicing my Hawaiian phrases Sincerely, Kevin
BlueSBDeath 2 #7 January 5, 2011 Kevin, We look forward to your move and having new jumpers on the DZ (as we need beer). Anyway, please plan on the high side for the cost, then as you are more ingrained in our local Ohana (family) the cost will go down because some of us will jump with you for FREE :) I am not sure what gear rental cost at this time, the prices may have changed from the web site post, I will get a current cost sheet from the DZ and update you this weekend. For the most part our students do not get video with jumps unless they request that, however; most of us have camera gear so when you jump with us you will get photo/video for the low low cost of beer :) Stay Safe, Aloha!!! KevinP 0 #8 January 6, 2011 Well, I don't drink beer very much, so when I do, I usually drink A (as in one) Guinness or Young's (Double Chocolate Stout is outstanding). However, when I get on the ground, I will make sure I have a couple of cases of piss, I mean more economical examples, on hand. Just joking. I wouldn't do that to anyone. At least some Sam Adams, but maybe not in cases. I am really looking forward to it! I'm telling you, when I said "aggressively pursuing," that wasn't an understatement. If it can be done, I plan on having the AFF complete in a weekend, then hopefully my A License in my pocket three weeks after that. I ain't playin! haha Sincerely, Kevin
BlueSBDeath 2 #9 January 6, 2011 No worries about the beer (Sam is my choice). Your progress will depend on your success as a student and our weather! We are very happy to help you meet all your goals, we just have to ensure you are learning as we go and learning safely!! Hawaii is a very cool place to learn to skydive and can be very dangerous too!! The DZ has ALL the hazards, ocean on one side, large hills on the other, trees, power lines, small DZ with fencing, and medium to high winds all the time!! Looking forward to your adventure too :) Arvel
KevinP 0 #10 January 7, 2011 Well, I have been commended on being "coachable and teachable," especially in areas in which I am ignorant. If Ernie Els tells me to hold a club differently to facilitate better contact with a golf ball, I'm gonna listen. If an AFF coach tells me to move my hand a half-inch to the left to facilitate more stable free fall, I'm gonna move it. There are very few things in which I have enough comfort to take advice with a grain of salt. I assure you that skydiving is not one of them. And I hope they have Sam Adams Black Lager in HI more readily than in TX lately. It's been months since I have seen any. Is it one of those seasonal beers? That would be a shame. BlueSBDeath 2 #11 January 7, 2011 Mmmm Sam Adams....... You will be fine, we just to often see young jumpers want to advance too soon and quit or get hurt early on. We will do our best to ensure you do not do either :) The life style and pace over here is much more laid back You will "hang loose" or go crazy!! See you soon!!!
