Very low cut away at Rantoul

I'm pretty new to this, so perhaps the situation wasn't as extreme as I perceived. Saturday afternoon there was a spinning malfunction in the main landing area by manifest. A more experienced skydiver said he saw the main open off heading. I noticed the guy trying to kick out of the spin from about 1,200 feet all the down to what I judged to be 300 to 400 feet. Everyone around me said it was certainly below 500 ft when he cut away. The reserve immediately deployed and apparently the guy landed ok. Did anyone else see this or know the details? I'd be interested to know what reserve he was using. It sure impressed me, and a few of experienced folks watching as well. Hopefully, the skydiver got out of this unscathed; he appeared to be standing ok but he was quite a distance from us.

I think I saw this one. Was it a blue and black main? I saw one where it looked like for sure there was a jumper in it, I turned my back to get the attention of some friends, turned back to watch and had about 5 seconds before the canopy hit. I thought someone had gone in; aparently he managed to get out of it and land under his reserve. I never saw the reserve out; someone else said they saw a yellow one land.

No rescue vehicles or personnel ever showed up so apparently the jumper was alright.

The type (design) of reserve is just one factor in how fast it deploys and inflates. RSL may have been a factor, the harness/container/reserve system certainly plays a role, and even the rigger. As a rigger, I would put type of reserve a little down on the list when it comes to determining fast deployment/inflation.

I guess getting to the right answer is easier done by asking the right questions. The voice of experience helps in that regard. I have plenty to ask that's clear. I do know (I think) that I'd like my reserve system to work that sweetly on my first rig, whatever it takes to get there.

It definitely was a yellow reserve. Don't recall the main. Everyone around me thought the cut away was below 500 feet but who knows? We were just happy that no emergency medical treatment was required.
BTW, Anyone know of a yellow reserve for sale?

That reminds me, of this one time...:D
I threw myself into line twists at 1,200 ft...and spinning hard. I was so scared b/c at 800 ft I thought I would be too low to cutaway, even with an RSL. Fortunately, I got out by about 3/400 ft...
Students are taught the decision altitude is 2,500 ft...but realistically, how low is too low???

My Rule is 1500 ft. My other 'rule', though while on solo is pull at 3k. This gives me time to play AND to get back from a long spot. My canopy is a older Raven II so it's not a great long distance cruiser. It also opens faster than a Sabre so I don't burn up much alti.

My logic in all this is that, if you pull at 2200 (say out of an RW dive) any high speed mal is going to bring you to 1500 at terminal. You will need 2-300 ft. to open a reserve. Now you're at a grand or so, NOT where you'd like to be, and it's time to land a sinking canopy that you've never flown before.

The difference between a spinning mal at 1500 and a total might be 100 feet or so. Why change your procedure for such a small difference? As for 'other' things like hook turns etc., well, since I'm not there yet...B|

PS: I successfully wrapped the Raven into twists - once - at about 3,000. For as fast as it happened and as long a it took to beat them out I'm glad I had the alti. to play with
