nws01 0 #1 June 30, 2002 At this dz there is really no outs so they have a rule that you must be under canopy at 3k. I am use to a snivel so at 3.5k I deployed my Spectre. I had something different today. As soon as I deployed the pilot chute it opened immediately with severe twists and I was spinning through the sky out of control . I tried to stop the spinning and kick out the twists but had no control whatsoever. I chopped while my body was on my back under canopy and I immediately arched and got back to the belly position before deploying my reserve. I had my second reserve ride today and I have yet to determine what happened. Any ideas?
freeflir29 0 #2 June 30, 2002 Glad it turned out OK. I can only guess but it had to be packing or really bad body position. Unless maybe your lines are severely out of trim. That can cause some really nasty openings.
nws01 0 #3 June 30, 2002 I think it was packing. My body position was fine. I don't know what the packing error was though. What do you all think?
freeflir29 0 #4 June 30, 2002 QuoteMy body position was fine I thought mine was fine Monday when my canopy tried to spin up on me. On slow mo review of the video you can see that just after I pitched I dipped my right shoulder. That caused the risers to be fairly uneven and the canopy really took off. Definately an "Oh Shit" moment. I think I was just worn out from jumping and the heat and just plain got lazy.
jncoughlin 0 #5 June 30, 2002 N....N Glad it turned out OK. You were just on the next load when I left around 4:30 yesterday. Hope you found the main. As for packing, I noticed that the packers were jammed yesterday and very tired by the end of the afternoon. I'll bet they paked at least 50 rigs each, maybe more. Who knows? BTW: thanks again for the goggles. I'll be there Wednesday. John C
jaymundo 0 #6 July 1, 2002 I had the same thing today at moss point. There were four twists which I was able to unwind. Its a new sabre 2 150 and it was really spinning. Some reliable sources said I should have chopped it.I dumped at 4000 so I felt I had a little time.Have experience with many canopies from 28 ft rounds to paradactyls but this was a real surprise and a wake up call to how fast this new shit can get squirrly.CHOP or NO CHOP yall
nws01 0 #7 July 1, 2002 I went back to the dropzone today and we looked at my main. The brakes were stowed and the slider was uncollapsed so I am wondering if it might have been body position or what? It is weird because the head instructor at the dz had the same malfunction 2 loads later by the same packer. She has packed my main numerous times with no problems though. I am puzzled as to why this malfunction happened and will move on. I also wiped the container down and scotch guarded the hell out of it. I was going to borrow gear and jump again but the clouds rolled over. Oh well, until next weekend!
drenaline 0 #8 July 1, 2002 My newbie opinion is packing, also check out the line trim like Clay said, and check the control lines to see if they are twisted. HISPA 21 www.panamafreefall.com
dove 0 #9 July 1, 2002 You know what Nathan? Sometimes shit just happens. Could be packing, body position, etc, etc, or it could just be dumb luck. The important thing is you're ok and you initiated your emergency procedures without a hitch. So congratulations! Now get back in the air! dove
