Billy...im just to the right of Ray Cottingham the cameraman. If you dont know him, hes the guy standing with the long hair.
George broke his leg on one of the practice jumps for the movie so he wound up not getting into the promo pics.

Ah, I see you now... well, only half of your face anyway, what's not in the shadow... Poor Georgie... you think he was kicking himself for that stroke of rotten luck?

QuoteI loved the one at Elsinore years back...
I'm 6'4" and is sooooo nice being able to actually stand up in and arrow-plain.
Anyone remember jumping John Travoltia's at Perris?
I believe this is Travolta's DC3 in the background. I'm pretty sure it belonged to him at one time. We did find a box containing a collection of rubber lips under the co-pilot's seat.
Travolt's DC-3 was a great jumpship while it lasted. Skip's have definetly made the most movies. I have a good memory of Mr. Douglas over a New Years boogie at Deland. Rock music all the way to altitude.

QuotePic definetly taken at Perris. Haven't seen a pic of Danny Gainer (Bear) in a long time.

A little off topic, but old 'Bear (Denny) and I were very good friends for a long time. We had a falling out and then patched it up. He sent me a heart-felt letter one day and I quickly put the disagreement behind us. The big guy is one of my oldest skydiving friends - I love you bro! Nuff said.

From the paintjob...that looks to be Our (hour) Douglas.

Some of the old Perris jumpers might recall the history of that aircraft. It was only around for a short while between say '89 & '91. I was told John Travolta had owned the 3 at one time.

And another one...!
Had a Demo In Nor Cal this past weekend,
This baby was there...we were 'scheduled' to get to jump it for the show...but a major clustermuck forced a change in platforms...
Without a doubt the cleanest I EVER seen!

You are right, that has got to be the sweetest DC-3 going. I am surprised they let you in it much less jump out of it.

I didn't get to jump her....
(find myself saying that a lot lately!)
Last minute 'power struggle' among the show 'muckity mucks' had all kinds of last minute changes....The flyers of both this '3' and the B-17 offered their services as platforms...
Instead....had the wonderful once in a life time chance to take just two of us in a 172!

QuoteVery cool Steve! I had heard this story when I started but was unsure if it was urban legend or nat and now you come up with a photo and even a name! He was one lucky individual to survive that relatively unscathed.
This incident is one of several featured in the documentary 'Dead Men's Tales', which is well worth a look if you haven't seen it. It's about narrow escapes by parachutists and skydivers, combining (very well done) reconstructions of the events and interviews with the people who were there. It's a British film, made in the early 90s, I think, by Leo Dickinson. Not sure how easy it is to get hold of now, especially outside the UK.
The C-47 that drug Michael was N140T, the silver aircraft that was at Z-Hills for years. No longer in the FAA registration.
N129H is the only DC-3 that I know of that was ever referred to as Mr Douglas. Yes, sad to see that she is park and looking like a derelict.

Coming from a C-182 cow pasture DZ, walking up and staring at Mr Douglas for the first time (early 80's) the aircraft looked like a Cadillac. Will never forget an early bird load at Covington,La, got a seat where I could lean my head back against one of the speakers...listened to "Freebird" all the way up. Is there a better way to wake up? I submit there is not!!

Your reply should almost go in the 'Ever jumped with anyone famous' thread...!
Mr. Douglas certainly qualifies!

Crack! Wish I'd thought of that before I posted that I had rode to altitude with JohnBoys sister
Was Mr Douglas the DC-3 that the ole hippie "Sox" crewed on? Anybody remember him? He held up the entire load so he could show my brother and I how to take a two way out ...(our first DC-3 leap)
His beard was so long it blew waaay up in the air in freefall....heck of a nice guy.
