Small main + average or big reserve

Recommended Posts

How safe is this? I current jump a PD143r reserve and stiletto 120. What happens in a two out situation? Is it worse to have a setup like this? What if I was to downsize to a 96-103 of some sort? Would it immediatly spin up?

The navy tests indicated that two similar sized canopies fly more stably than two dissimilar sizes. Derek's testing indicated that even two wildly dissimilar sizes (97 vs 180 or thereabouts) were controllable when deployed together.
That being said, you will likely open your reserve 20 times for every 1 main/reserve entanglement you have. Given that, the first priority is getting a reserve you can safely land even if you cut away low, if it is damaged froma high speed opening, if you have to land it semiconscious (due to a cypres firing) etc. Getting a reserve that is too small to land you safely to cover the .001% chance you may need it to fly compatibly with your main isn't the best tradeoff, in my opinion.

In both of my rigs I have a FX99. In one I have a Raven 1 (181) reserve and in the othr one I have a PD 176. It is a risk either way. You must decide which risk is more comfortable to you. If you are not ok with this increased risk the only option is to get a larger main. For me I would rather have the larger reserve.
