Who jumped into the 1986 World Series, Red Sox at Mets, Game 6 ?

Recommended Posts

I was just channel-surfing, and watching ESPN Classic, when a guy with a yellow canopy and trailing a hand-made "Go Mets!" banner landed in the infield between the pitcher's mound and first base. Using my remarkable powers of deduction (given the third batter of the iniing was at the plate and the cops escorted the jumper off the field :)
Does anyone know who it was, and the story behind it ?

The jumper's name was Michael Sergio, 37, a soap opera actor. He paid a $500 fine and did 100 hours of community service. Here is the sentencing order written by Justice Phyllis Flug... :)

'Twas game six of the series when out of the sky
Flew Sergio's parachute, a Mets banner held high
His goal was to spur our home team to success
Burst Beantown's ballon, claiming their Sox were the best.

The fans and the players cheered all they did see,
But not everyone present reacted with glee,
"Reckless endangerment" the DA spoke stern
"I recommend jail. There a lesson he'd learn"

Though the act proved harmless, on the field he didn't belong,
His trespass was sheer folly, and undeniably wrong.
But jail's not the answer in a case of this sort.
To balance the equities is the job of this court.

So a week before Christmas, here in the court,
I sentence defendant for interrupting a sport.
Community service and a fine you will pay.
Happy Holiday to all. And to all a good day.

Thanks for the info, Murray. I'd never seen that poem before.....kudos to the magistrate for having a sense of humor.

I guess if you tried that stunt nowadays, you'd find yourself playing tag with a Sidewinder. :)

Mike Sergio, an actor, and later a film maker, also helped Owen Quinn become the first person to parachute from the World Trade Center Tower #1 in 1975. Owen was Mike’s first jump course instructor, and he helped Owen get into the building, and distracted a security guard while Owen prepared to jump. Mike’s the one who took the famous photo of Owen’s launching over the side.

When Mike was approaching Shea Stadium that night, towing a large banner that said, “Go Mets,” he said he was ready to veer off into the parking lot rather than interrupt a play in progress. However, he realized the cheers he’s hearing are for him, and play on the field had already stopped.

Say what you will, but the Mets are trailing in that series, and behind in this game, until Sergio landed. When play resumed the Mets rallied to win the game, and eventually the series. Sport’s writers called it the second miracle of the NY Mets. (The first being, of course, they won the ’69 Series in their first year in the league.)

When the FAA came after him all they wanted is the name of the pilot who flew him over the stadium, but to this day, Sergio has never given up that information.

This probably won’t go down well with people who go along with the program, (my God, where did all you people come from?) and don’t say anything unless you never did a bandit jump yourself. But to me, Sergio, and others like him who operate outside the lines, are heroes. But, that’s just the rebel in me . . .

Nick,

The Mets came into being in 1962 I believe....with Casey Stengel (who had been fired as Yankees manager) as the manager. His famous quote, "Can't anybody here play this game?" was inspired by the incredible ineptitude of the expansion team he was given to manage.

And his "stunt" I might add...

Ended all legal jumps into MLB games for quite
some time!

When I was a GK, jumping into American League parks was happening often. National League parks were out of the question because the NL President still had heart burn from that jump. I missed out on quite a few stadium jumps because of that. [:/]

A hero is not someone who will let others carry the weight for his/her actions. What he did that day wiped out years of work by others to be accepted as professionals. It was a selfish and immature act.

Yes, of course I understand how you feel, but it might not have been Mike's actions as much as the Baseball commish's overreaction that "screwed" you.

Besides, think of the many inept demos performed since that time, demos that hurt people (both jumpers & spectators)? That's the real problem.

We also were "screwed" out of several paying stadium jumps in the old days by GK & Leap Frogs, who in those days, didn't have near the demo experience we did, but they swooped in and did the demos for free . . .

Oh well, life's not always fair.

I Hear ya brother!B|

Remember trying EVERYTHING to get
a gig into the 'Murph' and being told
only the Frogs were 'qualified' to jump there!:(

Years ago,
Pat Moorehead was starting a petition
addressing that very issue.

Basicly~

Why am I as a tax payer, (cough cough)
subsidizing my competition...
(Military Demo Teams)
who then under cut me and get all the "big" demos?!

He had the exact figures for the cost yearly to
'run' the Knights...WOW!:o

The Frogs on the other hand...
at least back then were not a 'sanctioned'
demo team by the Navy.

Training wasn't paid for...
no one on the team listed "Demo Jumper"
as an MOS.:P
They were a bunch of guys that did demos when
and where they could with only the slightest help
from the Navy.

Their budget was around 1/50th of the Knights...

But...
San Diego was an impossible market for a civilian
demo jumper no matter what your qualifications
or your price!

Hell...I knew a highly experienced demo jumper
that took up BASE jumping and writing articles
for the "Reader" for extra $ :)

(Missed ya this trip Nick, but I'll be back out in 10 days)

A certain demo jumper's two broken legs in a botched jump into the Mississippi State - Alabama football game some years back ended all demo jumps into Southeastern Conference games. Hasn't been another since. :( I even wrote a letter to the SEC commissioner asking for a reprieve earlier this year, but got no response.

Thankfully, I was able to get my one chance to jump into a 80,000+ seat stadium for a Conference USA game a few years ago. They still allow them. Just as long as nobody fucks up, we'll still get to do them.
