Double inverted exits

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

A couple of friends did about six of these last weekend (see attached). The Pitts Specials performed a loop in formation, they let go at the top of the loop (about 2500 ft) and I had to watch from the ground...

I know the inverted jumps have been done before but has it been done with two planes in formation???

Any info would be appreciated!

G

It looks like a D-bag, especially since it would appear that the PC isn't spring loaded but a collapsed main PC. Either the bridle is long or it came unattatched on that jump, or the camera angle is playing tricks on us.

I know it's been done with 4...:)
But they were Stearman, I can barely get in a pitts without a rig on...can't imagine with!

Loss more room in a stearman!B|

Great PIC!

i think the picture just hid the bridle going from the top of canopy to the d-bag. it sure doesn't look like a spring loaded PC to me.

do I see a freebag from the left-hand jumper?

Thats his main deploying. Remember, the picture was taken from 2,500 feet away. He sure was fast on the trigger. He is still head down from the exit.:P

Thanks airtwardo,

I figured that you would be the one who would know of another instance!

You are right, the Pitss is a tight fit and apparently needs a lot of speed to get up and over in the loop (like 160 kts!)

When and where did you do the Steerman? We have one here whose owner would be easier to convince if I could show him that it has been done before... B|

Here is another pic, this time air to air from a Yak flying alongside.

Later,
G

You should send those pics to Parachutist for the calender! Those are just TOO COOL!!

We did it at a demo some years ago...
and they didn't do a loop, all 4 were circling the spot and went wing over inverted at the same time...

It was great, but I got hung up a little on the way out, if I had to do it again..I would squat with my feet on the seat to be sure I was clear of everything.
of course I'm a large ecomony size jumper!

I've also just climbed out and dove off the lower wing a bunch of times... there is a yearly Stearman fly in at Galesburg, Il. Did a few demos for that.

I think there was a guy a fews years ago at the WFFC that was 'looping' jumpers out of a Stearman...

It's not a 'dangerous' jump...much easier I would think than a Pitts...small cockpit...canopy etc.

WFFC has a Pitts. Freddie from FL is the pilot, or was for the last few years, he's got a T bar mounted in the center of the wing to grab. What happens is he waggles the wings and thats your cue to stand up and grab the bar. Once you have a good grip on it he rolls the plane and you are left hanging upside down from the plane as he shoots off a roll of stills. Then he waves good bye and off you fall.

Both Crosskeys and the Ranch have Stearman Biplanes they fly jumpers with all the time. You might want to contact them for some info on it. :)

year(s) it was there....

could be wrong...:Sthe memory gets a bit fuzzy about some periods of time in those days!;)
