FALLING OUT: PARACHUTING & 9/11

Recommended Posts

I'm writing a thesis on the economic effects of 9/11 and skydiving. In Parachutist Nov 2001 "One Silent Weekend' there is a mention of seven drop zones that were closed because they were too close to the new enhanced B airspace. Does anybody know which DZs those were? I think bay area skydiving was one. too close to a nuclear power grid. Please let me know. If you have anything further to add please fire me away.

Bay Area Skydiving was definately one. I think some other Nor Cal DZ were also closed.

That was one time that I thought maybe it's not a good idea for both of us to be in the aviation industry. As a commercial pilot, my husband got furlowed and my business was shut down. In hind sight it wasn't very long, but we didn't know that at the time. :S

Andrew --

Skydive San Diego was closed at Nichols field, but they got permission to operate at Brown Field which is just outside the Class B lateral limits. I made a jump there on 9/22.

Also, every time they went to threat level Orange, there was a TFR 30 miles around nuclear power stations, etc. The DZ at Buckeye AZ was affected by that a few times, you might get in touch with Gary for details.

In addition, every time the President is in town, we get the 30 mile TFR's. They've affected both Perris and Elsinore a couple of times.

Personally, I've not been able to do the "Santa Claus Jump" with Rich Picirilli at Anaheim town square since the Disneyland TFR went into effect. The Shopping center is 2.87 miles form the point specified on the TFR.

See you at Elsinore tomorrow.

A lot of Canadian DZs were also closed for a week after 9/11.
For example: Pitt Meadows, Abbottsford and Chilliwack, BC were all closed because they are too close to the American border.
I understood shutting down American airspace for a day, but no-one has ever explained why they shut it down for a week.

seems pretty subjective - what would you understand?

1 day,
2 days,
6 1/2 days,
?

Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
