How Much Altitude Should it Take?

Recommended Posts

I guess I'm wondering what the average amount of altitude that's burned from throw out to fully opened canopy.
My usual sequence Turn N Burn at 4500 Deploy between 3500 to 3000 There Square by 2100 to 2000.
Is this normal?? It seems to me a lot of altitude for opening.

what kind of main are you flying? what diameter is your pc? there are a lot of variables that determing opening sequences, altitude. i used to fly a triathlon, that regularly "sniveled 600-700 feet, hated it, i throw, look up and go "today!!" do you deploy in a track? how do you pack? what's your "wing?" these are important variables to determine the answer to your question. :)Richard

Technically they're not. Since the average, in this case, is the sum of the distances divided by the number of openings, the data is there regardless of wing, pc, speed, etc....
That said, I do have an answer for me, and it seems to be about 1000ft from reaching for the pilot chute to sitting under a fully deployed canopy.

My main is a Safire 189
The pilot Chute I'm not sure of but will check.
I do not Deploy from a track!! Did that when I first got the rig smacked me HARD!!
I pro pack with the nose rolled and the line double Stowed.
My opening are soft and on heading (9 out of 10 times)

Trash pack, pro pack, psycho... they all open about the same for me in distance.
A normal canopy should be about 500 - 700 from PC inflation to slider down the lines and a long[/] sniviler is about 800-900 feet. Accourding to PD 400 feet is a firm opening while anything over 800 feet their test jumpers seem want to own as their own if they want a soft opener.
If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will....

Nope. I'm making a statement that the average, in this case, is the sum of the opening distances divided by the number of openings.
Example: 1000 + 800 + 600 + 1000 + 800 / 5 = 840.

i think we may all agree, ("key" word, "may") its how you roll the nose, if you do, and how many times that can vary canopy inflation speed, altitude loss, if not, i've never learned a damned thing about packing, and all of my demonstration tapes are false. i once forgot to uncolapse my slider, it opened in 10 feet! From my own experience:
Nova 150, 200-300 feet from PC toss to fully open canopy. This was painful at times.
Set-400 (tandem main) 1000-1500 feet from drouge release to fully open canopy.
Those were the extremes. Some other data points: (all are estimates of course)
Sabre 150 before mods: 200-400 feet
Sabre 150 after mods: 900-1000 feet
Tri 135: 600 feeet
Saphire 129 after line mod: 600 feet

I jumped a Safire 129 for a bit. My openings on it were great. Straight propack, no rolling the nose, tail not wrapped like lunch at a Mexican restaurant, slider pulled out. I would say my openings were brisk, never spanking, usually on heading and no more than 600 feet from throw out to being comfortable in the saddle.
I liked the canopy and it's performance pretty well. I had some problems with Icarus, however and have gone to a Cobalt 120.
I'm not knocking the Safire, I enjoyed mine with a solid 90% satisfaction.
