Mystery Dives

Recommended Posts

Anybody remember mystery dives. I was going through some old stuff and found my instructions for a mystery dive. In case you're not familiar, here's how it went. You were given a set of written instructions for the dive and that is all you knew. I found the instructions to a Mystery Dive that Sparky Gregory did. I was given a piece of paper with this written on it.

"You will exit behind Mack(Mack McVey). You are pin-you will be 5th to exit. You will take the left hand of Mack with you left hand. When Sparky closes, you will take his right hand with your right hand. Shortly thereafter, be prepaired for someone to hook up you left leg.":S

That was all I knew when I exited. It turned out to be a 10 way wedge, I think. They were a lot of work to put together because you had to write up instructions for each person. A hell of a lot of fun though.

Did a 8 way mystery dive at Byron. We did not get our instructions until on the plane at 8K. No talking was allowed once the instructions were passed out. I was to take Vic's right hand with my left and Tallguy's left with my right. The only other thing I knew was that Vic was in the base.

We funneled it twice in spectacular fashion. I laughed all the way under canopy until I landed. And then laughed some more. The video is a hoot. If you haven't done one, you need to give one a try.

I'd love to put one together or be on one. Yes, they were fun.

Darkwing used to organize them at my DZ before I sold it (and after too I think). They were a blast, and he did a great job organizing them. I was only on one of them, but he did quite a few as best I remember.

Maybe when he gets back from China he will go back to organizing...;) I mean that whole Dr. of Physics thing...what can that possibly do for someone...:):P

Yes I've done a few. They are really fun and require that everyone really THINKS
( I know ,,, rare to expect of skydiversB| ) through out the whole thing,,, especially if it is multi-point...
I have seen guys read their piece of paper once,,, and then throw it out the door !!! and I saw a guy read HIS and then Eat it...:o:D and I've seen others read it TEN times, and still be scratching their head, when the light came on....hahaha
Lots of laughs and Hi - 5's when we landed...
The organizer has a lot of work to do for them,,, so if you have a chance to be part of one
take it seriously and respect the person who puts it together....and of course ...ENJOY it...

I was bored this afternoon so I made up 3 Mystery Dive 8-ways. I did em in Word, and used AAA BBB CCC etc for the slots so you can just do a find/replace on em once you know people's names. Email me at wendy.faulkner@gmail.com if you wanna organize one and want to try mine out :-) Just lemme know how they go if you do it! They sound like a blast!

I did one for my 2000th jump and it was quite fun. It was an 8-way. For my teammates 2000th we tried a 16-way at Lake Wales, but somebody closed in the wrong slot, and that REALLY messes things up. People then try to make impossible grips, etc.

I recommend them, but start small.

Caroline still does them at Nethers sometimes - great fun. She also does random skydives, where the only rule is that she is the base and everyone then picks exit order and what they pick up. On the key, the only rule is that you can't take the same grip you let go. Some really weird formations come out of that type!

I was load organizing at Richmond a coulpe of years ago and Air craft was tight. You had a group come up to jump with you and it was either'CAN YOU MAKE 5 MINUTES OR WAIT 20"? We would take the 5 and put on our gear as the plane was taxiing of the active.I had my handy -dandy note pad and draw a jump with points during climb-out,that I would pass around. It was probably some of the best jumps we did.All grins and no stress. At Marine City we used to call out the jump on the step of the C-182 just before "GO". They were fun too. Our Mystery Dives out of our Caravan or Otter was a note" Carols left leg right hand ,second point Joes left arm with right hand" . Third point was the same kind of thing and you couldnt tell anyone. Amazing how well they worked with a jungle rules exit too.
