I wouldn't hold to the Cooper profile, because I believe it's one of the reasons this case is unsolved. However the FBI thoroughly investigated McCoy's whereabouts just 4 months after the Cooper heist and placed him elsewhere at the time. This is something Calame and Rhondes left out of their book among other things, because had they not, the book wouldn't have been possible.

It was, and as mentioned above, it is believed that Calame knows that McCoy is not Cooper as whenever you have crimes with similar MO's you investigate them. The FBI has conclusive evidence that McCoy is not Cooper.

One of the passages in that book places McCoy in Las Vegas just about 5-6 hours before the Cooper heist by credit card receipt. Therefore he's got 5 hours to go almost a 1000 miles and pull of a heist over unfamiliar territory and be back in time for turkey dinner.

McCoy is not Cooper.

You can see the tie clasp for yourself at FBI.gov. It was never a stick pin, it's always been a tie clasp.



:S Himmelsbach's book mentioned that he looked at his watch. AND please explain why the media was told it was a stickpin and/or tac?

B|Mouse borrowed a term from the FBI - throwdown.. The FBI was elated with the "evidence" left behind - it was pay back time!

There were Two Notes: The first was just to get the attention of the Stewardess as most have understood it.

Cooper gave Shaffner a list of demands to take to the Capain with orders to bring the note back. He was emphatic in stating that he wanted the note - BACK.

This is the way the media printed it and what I have been told ever since I started this 13 yrs ago.

I noted in recent material made public taken by the stewardess that it appears to be the way you are stating. but not what everyone has understood over the yrs. WHY would he want the notes back if he didn't write notes that he had prepared for the Pilot? There is something wrong with this!

The notes that the stewardess wrote doesn't say anything about reserve packs - only two back pacs.

Cooper did request to go to Mexico and the one thing that puzzled the FBI and the media was that Cooper referred to the intercom as Interphone.

:)talk to one of the agents actually there at the time the crime took place. There seems to be a lot missing in the Files - what was told to the media and what has been told over the yrs by those actually involved. You have to remember that yrs ago - agents WROTE a report, but that was a hectic time and not all was written down - they were busy trying to catch Cooper.

maybe it wasn't actually to view the ground - but simply because he was about to do a night jump...?

Of course, the McCoy case did show one thing: that such a jump could be done successfully!

btw Jo you asked earlier what wrist he wore the watch on - this doesn't necessarily mean anything; i'm right-handed, but i wear my watch on my right wrist.

If that is an accurate statement it may offer a small clue. Military aircraft intercom eqpt in the 40s and 50s and perhaps even today are referred to as Interphone gear eg. the AN/AIC 10 Interphone Amplifier used in 1950s transports like the C 54.

I have no military flying experience so I dont know if aircrew called it an Interphone or whether the term was just used by the radio technicians who installed and serviced them.

It has been called a trench coat, but it wasn't it was just a light weight tradtional nylon with a lining - black or blue.



Just browsing some of the stuff on Cooper from the FBI website, which includes some press clippings from the time.

Not sure what your point about the raincoat/trenchcoat is - the FBI bulletin describes it as "black rain-type overcoat or dark top coat". This seems to have been faithfully reported in the press articles that are also in the files.

No mention of tie pin/clasp/stick at all - just that he wore a narrow black tie. Jo, can you give some idea of which press reported it as a pin/tack/whatever?

It does say that the eyes were "possibly brown" which I find interesting. Somewhere along the way that "possible" seems to have been dropped from the description?

btw Ckret - as per some of the clippings, in the Pilot Bulletin they mention Cooper was reported to have "a bitter hatred" for airlines and may have worked for one; in AirLine Pilot it says "he expressed a bitter hatred for the airlines" - so I'm assuming this was "common knowledge" at the time, but I don't recall having seen it mentioned in this thread at all. Was this lead pursued? (It does seem to a backup for the Christiansen thesis again, of course;)) He is also reported as having a familiarity with airline aircraft operations.

Here's a good point. Quite often the press gets it wrong. But we naturally have a tendency to take what they say as fact. Dan Cooper turning into D.B Cooper from day one is a perfect example. As the press repeats it's errors the truth goes away. I think we should listen carefully to what Ckret says and get away from countering his facts from the files with our probable misconceptions from the press. We seem to keep muddying the waters here.

The aircraft crew or the FBI may have theorized on the reason that he turned off the cabin lights. They were sitting around with the "why did he do that?" type questions and that was the best guess from non-skydivers.

I am surprised that I forgot the night-vision reason. Good catch.

As the co-inventor of the hand-held and pen-sized signal flare assembly known as an illumination signal, Mk 79 Mod 0, that we marketed to the military during Viet Nam, I am of the opinion the bag he carried could easily have contained a launcher and a few dozen flare carts.

Our flares went 250 feet up and burned with a brilliant red light. The light could easily seen for many miles by any 'extraction' aircraft--although only a helicopter would be of much service in that terrain.

Since no reports of signal flare activity exist in anything that I've read on the FBI site or anywhere else, I'm assuming my flare gun assumption holds little credence.

I don't know how it got into the press that Cooper had something against the airlines. Tina asked him at one point why did he hijack the flight and Cooper replied, "I don't have a grudge against the airline, I just have a grudge."

not according to any witness statements on file. Cooper was described calm and polite through out the incident, with the exception of a few minutes when the fueling was taking to long. even then there was no outlash of anger he was just getting nervous, according to the statements.

A grudge - sounds like a good reason for a throw down. :P
:) there was other conversation other than what has been reported. I doubt that this can be substantiated without interviewing Tina again - some specific conversation took place that I can connect to Duane. I have already in the past shared the specifics of this with the FBI

:( I believe everything I have ever sent has gone into File 13 and 13 yrs of my life with it. Let me add to that the 17 yrs of marriage.

[:/]Makes one"ascared "to put their trust into this goverment of the USA. The grudge was promises made by misrepresentation. He was taking what he considered payment for services rendered.

Interesting. I wonder where Tosaw got the information in his book, you don't suppose he did something Himmelsbach didn't...like interview the FA's?

As the investigation goes, the grudge could very well be against the FAA.

Ckret, the FBI website says this about Christiansen:
"Kenneth Christiansen, named in a recent magazine article, didn’t match the physical description and was a skilled paratrooper." I really think that dismissing him on the grounds of the very experience that would have given him the skills to survive the jump ... just seems a bit odd. I know your views but hey there are other possibilities (as we saw re speculation about why McCoy dimmed the cabin lights ;))
Surely there is enough revitalised interest in the case now that you can get his DNA tested - and Mayfield's?

btw i see at least one of those old press reports gave the addresses of the flight attendants!! no wonder they went running scared and clammed up if they were worried he'd come after them!

This has been thrown back into the public arena.
On this site alone, it seems like this is a rehash of old information.

The general public has been sifted for anything of value. At this stage, anyone who wished to come forward, probably has - or has expired.

The most valuable use of time would probably be to DNA test the main suspects, instead of speculating on something that they will not admit to.

The major names that I keep seeing tossed about are Christiansen, McCoy, Weber, and Mayfield.

Using DNA, Weber has been excluded.
McCoy shouldn't be a problem.

I disagree completely. Ckret has reported getting an entire backlog of leads since coming forward in the past several months. I agree with you on one aspect, many of the people who would know are likely getting old or have already died. Time is wasting because the more we lose this mystery to time, the more impossible it becomes to solve it.

Yes and no. I think the DNA is a valuable tool. If any suspect ever is shown to be consistent with one of the donors, then it will speak loudly. However, my personal opinion is that the DNA will never be matched to any suspect.

There's two possibilities that lead to this conclusion:
1. If Cooper died, no suspect will ever match the tie.
2. If Cooper left the tie on purpose without ever wearing it himself, no suspect will ever match the tie.

I realize time will be the only thing that proves my hypothesis.

This isn't really an issue of semantics, it's more a fundamental realization of what has and what may not have taken place. The DNA collected from Skyjack71 was excluded from DNA found on the tie. Are we sure that we actually tested Weber's DNA? Are we sure that one of the donors on the tie was Cooper? No. We might be reasonably sure, but we are no where near certain.

Skyjack71 made a post a few days ago mentioning that two items tested by the FBI were tainted by another male. I'm also sticking to my theory that there's at least a 1 in 5 chance that Cooper purposely left the tie behind. Combine these probabilities and you're left with some level of doubt.

If the 1 in 5 chance were actually true, then the DNA would exonerate every suspect whether or not they were actually Cooper.

I have an update for everyone. I am nearly fully complete with my streams & creeks study. The best part is, you will be able to double check my work yourself.

I'm not sure what the max limit on pictures is in making a post, but I have over 50 of them. I had to divide Clark County into 50 sections, each section is a digital map showing creeks and streams.

The conclusion is, IF we're talking about Clark County, there's only about 6 ways for money to find its way through water to where it was found.

The two most likely routes are the Washougal River and through LaCamas Lake. The other possibilities are a few streams SW of LaCamas lake that feed directly into the Columbia River.

All other streams and creeks in Clark County meet up with either Vancouver Lake, Salmon Creek, East Lewis River, or Merwin/Lewis River.

If a person truly believes that Cooper died and the money washed downstream over time, then you will have a lot of places to search. The good news is that the locations in Clark County can pretty well be isolated.

I will make a post when I can, complete with maps & pictures.

I've already started this post above.

It looks like I can only do 9 attachments at a time. I'm sorry, something like this just takes a lot more than 9 attachments.

The key maps to look at are Maps 8-15, 26-28 and Map 46 where Brian Ingram found the Cooper money.

Some obvious things to point out are that the Columbia River flows West and then as it reaches Vancouver, it flows North.

Vancouver Lake turns into Lake River and adjoins the Columbia north of where the money was found. The Lewis River and East Fork Lewis River also meet the Columbia north of where the money was found. Salmon Creek meets up with Lake River which, again, winds up north of the money.

This leaves Washougal, LaCamas Lake, and a few minor streams that you can see on Map 28 as the only possible tributaries that would support the theory of the money somehow floating downstream to where it was found.

When you zoom in, it will allow you to select creeks and streams. The maps I used do not show any roads, as this would make it more challenging to follow the streams. However, I've gone in and played around some on my own just to follow the tributaries and make sure the red zone/hot zone I outlined are correct.

I looked closely at the picture of the map released by Ckret to determine the approximate flight path. I've placed this on a satellite aerial with the hot zone outlined. It should be noted that the pressure bump in question occured several miles north and to the west of the hot zone. This would suggest quite a bit of east winds & jump velocity. Looking at the vector, I don't know how he makes it into the hot zone, but this should certainly be something for the expert jumpers to debate.

I will make one request since I put in so much of my own time. The pictures and such cannot be used for any commercial purposes.

Please use the Clark County "Map Locations" with the numbers on it to figure out where you are. I traced down, then back up to make the maps easy to follow. Still, it's easy to get lost and it would take some time to figure them out without the overview map with approximate locations of the more detailed maps.
