howardwhite 6 #1 July 10, 2007 What was the last time you saw someone really reaching for the dead center, and on peas, not one of those wimpy tuffets? This is Coy McDonald at Elsinore in 1965, a member of the Army team which lost to the Marines in a jumpoff to represent the U.S. at the Adriatic Cup meet. Photo is from Sky Diver magazine. Lyle Cameron notes "The PCs just didn't perform in Elsinore's mindless heat." HW
JerryBaumchen 1,363 #2 July 10, 2007 Hi Howard, I remember that photo very well. Note the long risers the Army boys used. Cameron took EVERY opportunity to knock the ParaCommander; . However, it was THE canopy for many a year. Jerry
howardwhite 6 #3 July 10, 2007 Ah, yes, Lyle was absolutely prescient in his early leap onto the Crossbow bandwagon. To be fair, though, the same issue has a long story about jumping the PC. Aimed at newbies, it's a complement to the earlier and definitive Daryl Henry article, "Commanding the Commander," which was published both in Sky Diver and Parachutist. JerryBaumchen 1,363 #5 July 10, 2007 Hi Howard, I remember both articles: Daryl's was the complete article on how to fly the PC (man, did we ever study that writeup, plus the standard Sat. nite tavern arguements on whether he was right or not); where the 2nd article was more in the line of 'How to love your PC.' I cannot remember the author of the 2nd article; who was it? Jerry
howardwhite 6 #6 July 10, 2007 Quote I cannot remember the author of the 2nd article; who was it? Dave Becker. Never heard of him. HW
howardwhite 6 #7 July 10, 2007 QuoteAny way to post the PC article? I can scan and make a PDF, but such things are almost always too big to post here. I can email to people who PM me with an address (but it won't be overnight, as I'm currently swamped with projects.) HW
JerryBaumchen 1,363 #8 July 10, 2007 QuoteDave Becker. Never heard of him. He was a west coast-type; had his name in SKYDIVER quite a bit back in those days; rather hard-core accuracy guy. Jerry
Krip 2 #9 July 11, 2007 HI Jerry The only part I think I can remember about the article is "No hook turns to low to the ground" (under x') SOS 1163 (Baby)
JerryBaumchen 1,363 #10 July 11, 2007 Hi Howard, Quote Ah, yes, Lyle was absolutely prescient in his early leap onto the Crossbow bandwagon. One other little tidbit about this; in '65 Hal Evans put on a competition in Las Vegas and Daryl Henry showed up with a prototype Pioneer Para-Twin rig (their version of a piggyback and in Canada he could jump it without a TSO). Well, Daryl got injured on a layout landing and Cameron went on about how the Pioneer piggyback was dangerous and rarely worked, etc, etc. The story that was going around was that the Pioneer reserve hung lower on your back after opening and this is what caused Daryl's injury. howardwhite 6 #11 July 11, 2007 The Sixth World Meet monument being dedicated in Orange Saturday is surrounded by a granite curb. One of the curbstones remembers Hal Evans, and Joyce generously contributed to the monument project. I'm sorry Daryl won't be there for the event; he was an important part of the meet, in ways beyond his participation as a member of the Canadian team.
