chuckakers 426 #27 April 2, 2009 QuoteThe clip filmed over Ghoulidge by Boenish didn't have anyone named Mike Lee on the load. It was Fred (Dirty Fred) Grant, in a blue jumpsuit, who smacked into the tailplane. Left a small dent in the leading edge and a bruise on the under side of Fred's left arm. He said it would'a killed a normal man. I was the one hanging off the handle right behind the door. There were hang loads done all over the place after the Ghoulidge pictures got around. *Actually, "No Frills Flight" was the title on a poster of the second hang load done on a Twin Beech at Ghoulidge. Tony Gonzales photograohed it and had it printed. He had to reshoot because he sold the rights to the first hang load poster to the Arizona Republic newspaper and it was published as a cover shot for the Sunday supplement magazine they printed. Carl Boenish saw the poster and arranged to shoot movies of it. dEd Dugan flew the load and Bullit Bob flew the Cessna 182 camera ship. We did three loads, and on each load one or two jumpers, including me, jumped Boenish's cameras. On the load were, Carl Smith, Steve Noonan, Steve McNeil, Ron Lugginbill, Danny Peters, Fred Grant, Denise Death, Audie ??, Gilles Ploufe, Sally Rogers, John Janes and me. That's one of the best scenes in all of skydiving movies. Who was the photographer he almost took out on his way to the tail?Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
beenthere 0 #28 April 4, 2009 Here's the photo of Hod. I had always thought that this was the first one, but I also thought that Rande Deluca took the photo, now I'm thinking maybe it was Tony. Also thought it was over Casa Grande not Coolidge. Could be wrong about that too. Memories are a little foggy from back then.
3331 137 #29 April 5, 2009 Thank you for posting the hang load picture. I've posted it on my Facebook page with tags. Tony took the pictures over Coolidge AZ. Who are you? No need to stay incognito, the statute of limitations is long over. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.
steve1 5 #30 April 6, 2009 I always admired Hod. When I first met him (back in 73) Hod was working nights on the green chain in a sawmill. That was really a tough job. He'd work nights and skydive during the day. He had over a 1,000 jumps on the same 28 ft. round that was covered with duck tape. B.J. made him get a better canopy because he was holding up the team on windy days. Although Hod never had much money, back in the day, he still managed to make a lot of jumps, and jump with the big boys. His wife Tina said that they even lived in a tent for a while at Perris. He now owns a jump operation in Ronan, Montana....
steve1 5 #31 April 6, 2009 Beenthere, I was wondering if that was B.J. Worth, in the picture, (crouching just to the left of Hod....The jumper giving the one finger salute.) It kind of looks like him.
3331 137 #32 April 6, 2009 The jumper you're referring to is Pat Melroy. BJ Worth was on many of the Hang Loads over Coolidge Arizona. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

rdufokker 6 #34 April 19, 2009 QuoteQuote Do you know where the " no-frills" load on the cover of 'skies call' was done and with what airplane?....J..................................................... That particular one was done out of the a/c that Hooper had operated and was later sold to Bobby Frierson of Barnwell, SC. He was a hoot! I don't recall where the pic was taken but knew a lot of those on the load. Phil and Tanya McCormick featured prominently next to the engine nacelle. Bobby was flying. Chalfont may know better. jon The picture from "Skys Call" was done from Raeford, NC. That Lockheed 10E was (as I recall) the 10th serial number after Amelia's. I saw it years ago in a museum with a plaque on the side that still read "Raeford Parachute Center" As I recall that was a world record for most people on the outside of an airplane until Caiden used his Tri-motor to put 16 or 18 outside and then complained about almost stalling the thing.
