When you spend as much time as I have working around a ‘bunch of knobs’ you become rather adept at identifying them from a fair distance. The images of the instrument panel offered a few hints as to their pedigree.

The choices are relatively limited as to the potential makers of commercial avionics and instruments including Collins, Gables and Sperry among the suspect pool.

So gaze upon the knobs, dials and needles and become one with the cockpit filled with switches and lights all blinking and flashing. That segmented RMI needle and orange slice flag on the HSI were indicators of the Sperry Fairy visiting the panel.

Nice round ‘steam gauges’ just like God intended us to use instead of these laptop screens with Hello Kitty displays and Latte dispensers.

Whoa, for a minute there I almost betrayed a bias.

Bruce, you need to ask Bob why Sheridan called himself "Dan" - what that's all about if Bob knows?

I though that was obvious when I saw it - SheriDAN. Like someone named Albert might call himself Bert, or like Michelle becomes Shell or Shelly.
(and Sherry probably isn't a desirable short form of a name for a macho guy is it?!)
Skydiving: wasting fossil fuels just for fun.

1. "Dan" is a shortened form of Sheridan, Bob informed me this afternoon. I'm a tad surprised that Bob hasn't posted here yet, introduced himself and answered some of many questions posted, directly.

2. "Letters"? I don't understand this question, G.

3. I'm looking forward to reading Petey's book.

4. Yeah, I got a funny feeling about Sheridan from Bob and Jane's account. Could Petey have been setting them up for a free 30-day inservice into the mechanics of aft stairs on Boeing craft? Petey certainly was an a-moral guy, ie: re-setting fires, non-payment of rent, designing the system to beat the system, etc.

5. I have no knowledge of why the FBI re-initiated their investigation, or why they launched it in the first place. SA Mary Fyrar didn't know, either. She just went on a swab-run a coule days before retirement and brought a newbie with her. Mary didn't even know who initiated the request for the swab.

That said, Larry C told me that the Bureau targeted skydiving and private pilot communities right off the bat, and they did a very deep and comprehensive search according to people in the field such as jump master Bruce Thun at Pierce County Airport. (Except for Barb Dayton - of course) (smile.)

Thun told me he marveled at how much personal and confidential information the feds had on some people. Bruce told me that everyone at Thun Field were muttering, "How did they know that?"

good info Bruce - thanks.

by letters I meant his letter to the SF Chronicle?
Maybe I misread that - will go back and re/read.

The FBI's concentration on the skydiving community
shows their initial focus/interpretation ... not the
nasty vile dumb food worker profile H dispensed
for public consumption. But it proved a dry hole.
But,, that alone explains the continued interest
in Petey who might as well have had a neon sign
on himself. Just speaking for myself, your account
looks like s.o.p. on the FBI's part. I mean you
look at the obvious first. But the obvious proved
empty. Thus, here we are today.

Sigh. I want a solution, not an endless mystery. We've got a few plausible Coopers. Pick one and let's have a party. ;)

This new Sheridan Peterson info is tantalizing, but the FBI has had two swings at that pitch and they walked. No home run, no grand slam.

Yeah, Farflung indeed has a gift.

We get his talents free here Robert.

If you get him published, our free ride will end.

Farflung will soon be hob nobbing with the elite and holding court at posh book signing parties.

There will be talk of a movie. There will be groupies.

He will deny he ever knew us, and wisely so. ;)

Sheridan's book should answer a lot of your questions. You can read it on line. It is NOT available anywhere.

Your opinion of Sheridan setting up Bob and Jan for a 30 day inservice is way off. My insight into Sheridan is he was a hard worker and chose to do thing the right way. He had some hard times while trying to support his family after his divorce, but what guy didn't in those days. I do NOT expect Sheridan needed any information from Bob about the aft stairs.

I have heard this Bob and Jane story before, but don't recall from who or where. It seems it has been engarnished since I first heard the story.

It was a well know fact from the beginning of the investigation that the FBI was targeting skydivers, smokejumpers, etc.
Larry Carr was only repeating what was a well know fact and mentioned by the FBI and the newpapers many times.

Where is Thun Field? What is Thun Field? Not everyone knows this information.

The Good News is: Peterson is a genuine
candidate self spawned and FBI tested - no less.
Real skills and real history. Nothing made up.
Red flag went up when he came to the FBI's
attention ... they pursued him, not the reverse.
Serious candidate. These traits alone separate
him from the crowd. And he needs no publisher!

Wish I had your way with words.:|

I am reading a book by Norman Maclean born in Carinda, Iowa in 1902, but I am puzzled by something. He worked in the logging camps and for the United States Forest Servcie before beginning his academic career. This goes on to say he was Willaim Rainey Harper Professor of English at the University of Chicago until his retirement in 1973. He also wrote another book called A River Runs Through It and Other Stories

This book is called Young Men and Fire and is about the Mann Gulch Fire in 1949 and was actually put together from the manuscripts after his death by the University.

Does anyone have a copy of A River Runs Through It.

AH, Jo, I love Norman Maclean (spelling?). Young Men and Fire is a fantastic book, as is A River Runs through It. Oddly, I don't have a copy of either. Movie is top-notch, too, stars Robert Redford.

I just finished The Big Burn by Tim Egan. Another great book along these lines, although not as gripping as Norman's work.

As for Thun Field, Jo, how come you're not reading MY stuff???? Thun Field is the local term for Pierce County Airport, home of Barb Dayton, site of mucho filming by Edge West, and the baliwick of Bruce Thun, son of John, who built the airport in the 40s.

So you knew WHY that list got my attention? Dusty Smith on the same page as Sheridan Petersen.

Good charcoal, but surely the caption was your own. Do not make so much fun of the ears - not if you see pictures of his hair longer and with sideburns even though the hair was gray. Keep an open mind, just as I have to do in the opposite direction. The only one his ears appear large in are the close haircuts and prison shots. I told you he was a chameleon in changing his appearance.

So who is Dusty Collins?
And Who is Dusty Smith?

The latest,

Bob says that the pix of Sheridan Peterson we've been circulating around here, provided via Snowmman once upon a time, is not the Dan Peterson he knew in 61. However, the Sheridan Peterson in the Parachutist magazine, where Dan is in skydiving gear and looks at least 75 years old could be the Dan that he remembers.

I meet with Bob on Monday to continue the conversation.

I could use some photos of Sheridan through the years if anyone can dig them up. Thanks.

That is, unless the person remembering is affirming/confirming what one has on one’s “answer shopping list”!

Research is difficult, that’s why I don’t do any. If it was easy, anybody with an internet account could do it!

Maybe the man who called himself Sheridan Peterson was NOT {Peterson but someone using his identification). YOU Think?

Maybe you should show Bob some pictures of other suspects from around 1960 and see what POPS.

Duane was supposedly in prison in 1961 at Canon City. 1957 (well, we know NOW he was not only in California and was in St. Pete, FL). But we loose him until he ends up in El Paso County in Canon City, CO in prison.

Maybe some one should ask Bob and Jane if they saw a picture ID. of Peterson. Maybe someone should ask Peterson where he was at this time and if it was actually him. Perhaps Peterson knows nothing of the claim Bob and Jane are making.

Sheridan Peterson, D-2024 wrote:

On my fortieth birthday. May 2, 1965, I made my first “batwing” skydive at the Issaquah Sport Parachute Club just east of Seattle. A seamstress sewed patches of denim to a pair of coveralls beneath both arms and between the legs. The space from my elbow to my wrist was held in place with a cord that was looped over the thumb. Just prior to reaching in for the pull, I’d slip the loop from my thumb.

Because the Parachute Club of America, the USPA’s predecessor, prohibited the use of “batwings”, the club safety officer forbid me to jump. However, Linn Emerick (C-1036) interceded. He said that he saw nothing wrong with the wings. It was his club and if I wanted to jump them I had his authorization.

I made a thirty second delay from seventy-two hundred feet; however the wings slowed my decent, so I assume that it was a forty or forty-five second delay. I wrote in my log book that the wings improved my stability and that the turns were slower. I made a second thirty second that day.

My “batwing” venture ended three years later in Vietnam. Although I was the president and jump master of the Saigon Sport Parachute Club, Sgt. Ray Duffy, A Golden Knight, tore the wings from my coveralls at a meeting while I was in the Mekong Delta working as a Refugee Advisor. He too said that “batwings” were prohibited.

Pretty damned cool Pete!

We know you read this forum, why not just say hi? You dont have to talk about Cooper stuff.

Tell us about the gear you jumped in China. Looks like no cutaway mechanism???

Great photo of you in Musika's Parachutist article. Hope I look that good and am still jumping when I am that old.

My kid lives in Beijing and says skydiving is VERY expensive in China. How much was your jump? What kind of canopy? How was your landing?

Thank YOU to both 377 and Georger. When was the picture of Petersen made - what yr? Surely not in the last few yrs!

Wow did they ever get a lot wrong regarding Duane Weber.

Weber whispered to his wife, “I’m Dan Cooper.” Mrs. Weber had no idea what he meant. In frustration he said, “Oh, let it die with me!”

Not the way it was but it will do. 11 day before he died and he use the F---ing word when I didn't grasp what he was telling me.

It was only after he was gone that his wife studied the 1971 hijacking.

I didn't study anything - I wasn't looking for anything because I didn't know who DAN COOPER was.

.Mrs. Weber was convinced her husband was the hijacker. She agreed to take a polygraph test with the FBI, and apparently passed. However, Weber was eliminated as a suspect after a DNA test found no match.

The FBI never offered me a polygraph test (she must have got that from Jerry). Now we know that the DNA is so incomplete they cannot rule ANY ONE out or IN. There was never any record of a print taken from a drink glass....unless that is one of the many facts of the case the FBI has kept secret.
