Can anyone ID any of these guys? Could one of them be Sheridan. I do NOT believe that this is a picture of the jumpers who died in Mann Gulch, but just a picture of Smokejumpers. The back of the book states "Cover Photograph: A Smokejumper crew before practice jump, Missoula, Montana July 8, 1949. courtesy USDA Forest Service.
I am going to contact the Smokejumper Magazine and see if they can ID these guys - there are lots of possible "Coopers" in this photo. NO, Weber is NOT one of them...but is Sheridan? Seems to be around his time in Missoula.

Those individuals killed in Mann Gulch were an exceptional microcosm of the American population to say the least. None of them were ne’er do well ‘Barflys’ or individuals that were casually selected. Many were veterans from WWII and nine of them were college graduates or college students with several studying forestry. These guys all appear to have had the ‘Right Stuff’.
History is typically recorded in a binary fashion with dates and a couple names along with the general cause. I suppose this is already too much for most to digest and future versions will be even more condensed. After all, how many are guilty of crying the question “What does this have to do with (fill in the blank)?” Don’t wait for the translation, just answer… Yes or No!
So there was this group of people that were called to rid the planet of NAZIs and they succeeded on 8 May 1945. The end.
Just kidding, but that is how it has been treated historically. After years of grinding training and practice the entire system was expected to go back to working at the Piggly Wiggly or selling insurance in a single step. Delusional to say the least.
There were a couple programs that had unintentionally served as a transition back to civil life. The first program was the 52-20 Club, where all veterans were given $20 per week, for 52 weeks while they looked for civilian employment. Of the veterans who I have spoken with who enrolled in the 52-20, all of them said they took exactly 52 weeks to find a job or select a college. My kinda guys.
Many said they took advantage of the leather flight gear and ‘Crusher’ hats and used them along with newly purchased motorcycles to ride formation across the country they just got through defending, while trying to relate to people who worried about neighbor’s lawns being too long. At least they were able to socialize with like minded for a brief time.
The second program was the GI Bill where veterans could attend college. This was another good exercise for the brain and left three months available to work during what is now called summer vacation (what are we evolving into?) at tasks which included Smoke Jumping.
It was after this lengthy process that many veterans were able to assimilate into the bland, repetitive slow death that most of us like to portray as dangerous and exciting vocations which include software migration management and extruded polymer sales. Pullleeeeassse.

Farflung, I think you're the only one on here that might really need the little copyright thingy.

Oh my Gawd....do you know my neighbor?? When we first moved into our home years ago the first thing our neighbor told us was how well that the previous owner had kept up his lawn....before including his expectations that we would continue this time honored tradition. Boy did his hopes get crushed. I mean it's presentable, but if given a choice between cutting grass and going to the lake for a picnic, gotta tell you the grass is gonna grow for a few more days.

You can be my neighbor anytime 99. Tolerance for imperfect turf is a good fit. Liking big antennas is another plus.
Once a neighbor asked if I was "having trouble" with my lawn. Yeah, I said. Watering it, fertilizing it and mowing it is a lot of trouble and my Dad told me to stay away from trouble.
Another neighbor fretting about about my awesome new rotary radio antenna, which looks a bit like those things in the Jody Foster movie Contact. It was designed and built by Snowmman himself. The neighbor asked hopefully: "is that thing temporary?". Yeah, I said, it's only there until the really big one gets finished.
Welcome to my hood.

QuoteThe subject of Smokejumpers is gaining some momentum and appears to be gobbling up some lore at the same time. How unique for this thread.

The book writer only referred to 'Barflys' in reference to when they needed more people on the firelines (on the ground) and the forestry had no one to spare. His statement was NOT in reference to the jumpers (I hope no one took it that way).
Most of these were well motivated and intelligent young men working on their education, but the writer mentions the exception - some were there only to make enough money to spend 3 months in Hawaii so evidently the pay rate for smokejumpers was pretty good.
One of the survivors was a young man by the name of Walter Rumsey along with Sallee. Maclean found both of them in 1978 and was able to get them to go back to Mann Gulch with him. This is the current chapter I am on now.
Haven't been feeling to good and I seem to fall asleep when ever I try to read lately. This is a compelling book - about Smokejumpers. I used to be able to read a book in 4 hours - now I suffer from AADS - just another word for Early Old Timers.
Naahhh! Maclean has been my bed companion for a about 3 wks...but, I keep falling asleep.
When I wake up the light is on and there lies Maclean right next to me.

Oh, Well! So it's only a book!

I know Georger will find this article interesting.
This system was operating at McChord AFB and should have made it a piece of cake for the scrambled F 106s to intercept the NWA 727.
How humiliating to have a C 130 Herc make the catch and the F 106s miss it.

Yes indeed, the weekend Squire (read 377) comes out to mow the lawn. Sound like paradise.
Rows of houses that are all the same, and no one seems to care. From Mickey’s lips to the HOAs ears.
See Mrs. Grey (code for smokin99) is proud today because she’s lounging at the lake.
Happy now smokin99, enjoy your leisure activities while leaving the rest of your subdivision behind to suffer glancing at your overdeveloped dichondra?
Well you both better get in step and learn to follow the ‘Unwritten Rules’ so generously passed to you via passive aggressive and well rehearsed speech structure. Try to imagine being great for a change. Join in and be part of one HOA, one approved color of beige and the same tastefully elegant height of lawn.

I never thought of the lawn police as Turf Nazis, but now I do and I am getting pissed.
Who are they to say that green is superior to brown?
The solution is coming, dandelion season, weeds galore and they will spread their little paratrooper seeds far and wide with the spring winds.
They can have my antenna when they pry it out of my cold dead hands.

That is a chair attached to a bunch of Balloons.
NOT one witness has ever claimed Cooper was balding - the shading on the composite represents a slanted forehead and not a receding hair line.
I believe we had the man in the chair posted on this thread before.
P.S. Georger:
Maybe you need to redo the little girls ears with your new soft ware.
Also redo Duane's ears and remember the photo you are using Weber has a prison hair cut - very close. Put sideburns on and fill out the hair line and you have a Cooper that is as close as anything else you can come up with. Have all the fun you want because it will soon come to an end.
Strange you never made ONE comment about John (Duane's brother) and Tosaw knowing each other. Why is that? How large was Modesto in the 60's?
How meny Clubs existed?
How man Churches existed?
Where is Arcadia?
