kingbunky 3 #1 May 23, 2008 i came across the attached pic on Dark Roasted Blend today. the caption says "Wings for Paratroopers. Designed and tried out in 1935 (!) by the Russian engineer Safronov". looks plausible i suppose, anyone here know anything more about it?"Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." RB_Hammer 0 #2 May 23, 2008 What's that hanging between his legs? Part of the parachute rig or leg wing? Wonder how/if the airlerons work?"I'm not lost. I don't know where I'm going, but there's no sense in being late." Mathew Quigley
raftman 12 #3 May 23, 2008 I wondered about that as well. It also looks like the rings on either side control the flaps maybe?

ericfradet 0 #5 June 2, 2008 I am very interested to know , where did you find this picture ? ! so far in France, we believed that Leo Valentin was the first one to use rigid wings in the years 50..do we have any testimony from some russian jumpers who were withness from the jump ? I have to say that we do not know much about russian parachute history..

GreenLight 7 #8 June 3, 2008 From Skydiver Magazine... "Leo Valetin was experimenting in the late 40's with winged flight, had several injuries & kept coming back with a new plan. He was getting really close to planning how to land it (and live). His last configuration looked like he had it. So he exited a large door from a D-18 type aircraft. This attempt was his last." http://www.airtrash.com/blast/leowingdeath.jpgGreen Light "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." ericfradet 0 #9 June 4, 2008 in fact the real name from the russian engineer is Sanfirov, not sanfronov, here is the original link from where it comes from: http://forum.blockhaus.ru/index.php?showtopic=13998
