Free for nothing....shroud line knife

Recommended Posts

I was cleaning out some stuff in the barn and ran across an old military shroud line knife, Army issue I think but if anyone has a use for it, send me your snail mail address and it's yours...

First come first serve sir, it is yours! I will put it in monday's mail for ya....enjoy...this one I probably got when I was a rigger at Zhills, we got a lot of surplus harnesses, many with those attached....
If you had a lineover it was the cat's ass to get it corrected with one of these. I carried one for years as part of my scuba outfit and always had one handy when flying jumpers....

Don’t get me wrong Bill, but when I hear parachute suspension lines called shroud lines it gives me a case of high pucker factor because for centuries shroud lines have been used to tie cloth around the dead before they are put into the ground or into the sea.

But now after saying that, I do remember a few malfunctions when my suspension lines almost turned into shroud lines.

Oh well, as Roseanne Roseanneadanna always said on SNL, “Never mind”.

I totally understand how you could feel on that one...lol...I guess "suspension lines" is really what they are, don't know why they bastardized it into "shroud" lines....perhaps because the parachute somehow resembled a funeral shroud...
Maybe Howard can shed some trivia light on that aspect of the nomenclature.
Further googling supplies these tidbits, the closest one would be the maritime useage.
1. a cloth used to wrap a corpse for burial; winding sheet
2. something that covers, protects, or screens; veil; shelter
3. any of a set of ropes or wires stretched from a ship's side to a masthead to offset lateral strain on the mast
4. any of the set of lines from the canopy of a parachute to the harness
in full shroud line

Thanks Bill,

But it still makes me get a cold shiver up my spine. Maybe I just need to go out and air it out. One thing I will not do is jump without a line knife. I've got enough jumps into the back country to know how valuable that little thing can be. Today I carry a modified one with me when I go camping or fishing.

Hi Dennis and star,
Yup, I guess yer' hook knife is the orange handle with the single fixed hook blade. Had one of those on my old QAC reserve tucked in the bungee. Dumbass me, I didn't attach the case somehow to the bungee so when I had a mal off it went!! It's somewhere up on the hill across the road from the Otay DZ. Saw a couple of the switchblade/hook knife orange handle survival knives at the Gun Show. Fuckers wanted $45-$55 for em'!!
Heard a story around the old DZ back in the day that in the old "Barnstorming Daze" a lot of the old parachutes jumps didn't turn out well. Subsequently where the guy hammered, they just covered him up with the canopy, hence like from the old song,"His canopy became his shroud!!" Grim, but the beat goes on!

Sounds like a shroud line to me.
I don't care how many skydives you've got,
until you stepped into complete darkness at
800' wearing 95 lbs of equipment and 42 lbs
of parachute, son you are still a leg!

Yea the orange handle switchblade/hook knife is the one I use for camping and fishing. I never liked it for jumping because sometimes I wear gloves and if you are spinning, it could be hard to see the little button you need to unlock it and then you need to push another button to get the blade out. For jumping I use a little survival kit I got from Alan Silver. It fits on the web right above my reserve ripcord handle. The knife has a lanyard that keeps it from falling away and at arms length so I can still get it if I go into a spin while trying to take care of business. There is also a reflection mirror and some first aid things and a fire starter kit.

I think I might HAVE your Otay knife! :o

I was test jumping Phantoms and use to get blown onto that hill now & then...no shit I found a beat up one walking back down once...probably about 83-84 ?

AND...

I have a couple of those Camillus switchblades stashed away,
oldest son broke the one I use to open mail so I locked up the other two I have until he moves out! :);)

They were made wrong, the HOOK blade was supposed to be the spring-loaded side.
