riggerrob 643 #27 May 24, 2014 KripNot sure if size (length) matters for the bark. I know it does for the weight, accuracy, and maybe velocity which could be related to the bark. I wonder if back in the day those jumpers had to wear hearing protection. R. ................................................................................. Yes, I suspect that the FG 42 BARKS a lot of unburnt gunpowder out the muzzle. High-speed photographs show a 40 cm ball of flame. Earlier rifles used their longer barrels to convert all of that gun powder to propel the bullet farther and faster. Mauser 98s were well respected as sniper rifles that were accurate out to a kilometer. Back during World War 2, no soldiers wore ear protection, especially not in combat. Millions of old soldiers went deaf as young men.
PiLFy 3 #28 May 24, 2014 "During the invasion of Crete (1941) many German paratroopers died before they could grab their long guns." Many German paratroopers died because they lacked the firepower to suppress opposition. The Greeks tore them up w/machineguns & rifles while the Germans were pinned down w/only their sidearms. A lot of Men died trying to get to their long guns. The FG42 was designed to give them MG42-ish firepower when they first landed.
riggerrob 643 #29 May 24, 2014 PiLFyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISKnl1OnI9Y&feature=related Still look like it kicks pretty good. Just as well you don't want one. I recall seeing one sell for $85,000 not too long ago. ..................................................................................... I still WANT an FG 42 ... just cannot afford the $100,000 price for originals. Originals rarely come up at auction. Originals are far to valuable to fire. Fortunately, replicas are now being made in Germany and Texas. I reviewed a replica of an early FG 42 made by Dittrich in Germany. Smith in Texas makes a replica of a late FG 42. Modern FG 42 replicas only fire semi-automatic and retail for $8,000 US.
PiLFy 3 #30 May 25, 2014 "Fortunately, replicas are now being made in Germany and Texas." I wasn't aware of that. I've always wanted one, too. $8K for a Rifle, though?? Sorry. That's too rich for my blood. I will look them up, though. Thanks.

I still want an FG 42 Mark 2 (G) with a gas port that will not burn my left hand. This review is similar to my review of Precision's R-Max 118 reserve. At the end of that review, I said that I would never buy an R-Max 118, but would seriously consider an R-Max 150 the next time I buy a reserve.
PiLFy 3 #33 June 4, 2014 Didn't miss your point (?). You've already answered that you want one.
PiLFy 3 #34 June 4, 2014 Quote "Well, my SKS with the 30-round mag popping off AK rounds works pretty good, and is a lot cheaper. It's hell-on-wheels at anything 300M or less, although the sights adjust up to over 1,000 meters." Sorry friend, but a rickity, rattling, stamped-steel SKS isn't anywhere near being in the same league.
Krip 2 #35 June 5, 2014 Hi Robert When the sks was first being imported into the US we saw a paratrooper model. Shorter barrel. Couldnt decide, then they took away the bayonet. Some came with clips, some with mags. Some had stamped receivers, some were milled. Some had nice furniture, some of the stocks looked like they were made out of a fruit box, or pallet wood. To confusing and the stores were jammed. I gave up Nice furniture on your sks. One Jump Wonder
