Training and Waver videos

I’m curious about a couple of things regarding training and waver videos.

Does anyone use a waver video for other than tandem? It has always seemed like such a good idea in the event of an accident/incident to be able to say to a potential jury that the person had watched said video, regardless of whether it was tandem, AFF, IAD, whatever.

On a somewhat related subject, I once saw a video used by a Strong TI (Not a video produced by Strong) that did the usual waver, but also went through the whole ground training. I guess in theory after seeing this video, you would just need to show them the exit, and arch em.

I’m not suggesting that this is a good training method, and I don’t really want a bunch of guys “advising” me that this is a crappy idea. We always give our tandem students/passengers a through ground briefing, for multiple and obvious reasons.

Experience is what you get when you thought you were going to get something else.

Perris has a video DZ brief and waiver video. (coupled with paperwork).

All exp jumpers have to watch it and sign to say they've seen it, and state the date and that they've seen it into a camera.... but then that's california.

We use a video tape to train tandem students.
The amusing thing is that some of them grasp 90% of the material mentioned in the video, while others' brains slip into neutral the moment the video starts rolling.
So we always back up the video with personal instruction.
With bright students. it is a simple matter of: "Please demonstrate what you will do in the doorway. Good!" followed by minor corrections.

With "less bright" students we have to repeat ALL of the material just covered in the training video - in more detail.

My DZ uses a video waiver for their static line first jump course. It is a precursor to the training video that SDC put out so many years ago.

I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Never used a video for training tandems.

For regular student video can be helpfull to clarify some issues. (Opening, malfunctions, break-away...)

I think I have the video you speak of. Does it have a guy with black hair, beard, and moustache? I have a copy of his video. Interesting character.

I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

I think so, shows verious landings, goes into detail with "Valsalvo" method, etc.

Yes, the guy's name is John Bonin. He is out of skydiving last I heard. It is kind of a long video, but has some strong points.

I am not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

At my home DZ, when I worked there, they used the John Bonin tandem video. Besides being abso-fucking-lutely cheesy beyond belief, it did offer the necessary info in a concise fashion. We could always tell when they got to the part of the video where the student slid in on their face because the whole classroom would start laughing at once.

In retrospect I can train a tandem student a hell of a lot quicker and more effectively one on one.

We don't use it at our DZ. I do have a never veiwed copy though. I worked with John for a season. He is definitely an interesting character.
