Recert w/ new helmet

Recommended Posts

Hey everybody,
I'm finally back in Florida after a very boring and very cold stay back home up in Philly. Unfortunately, I was unable to jump while I was home and I dont have my A license yet and have gone over the 30 days without jumping limit. SOB! Anyway, I got a new Z-1 helmet for Christmas and am all excited about trying it. Problem is, I've never jumped with a full-face before, and I'm wondering if it would detract from my performance during my recertification jump. Do any of you who have jumped with a full-face think that it would cause enough of a distraction the first time to detract from my recertification jump performance.

Some DZs and some instructors won't allow students to jump with a full face. It was already mentioned that a tinted lens might cause problems with instructors, it will also prevent you from hearing the radio if you haven't been signed off yet.

Gee Chris, what a creative user name. haha...this is Marshall (in case you couldnt tell). I wouldnt worry about it...they only need to see what your doing really, not your eyes. Just ask whoever jumps with you when you do it I guess (wont be Pablo, hes gone someplace till Feb. 18). Did you order that new jumpsuit yet? Anyways...have fun, talk to you later....

Damn dude, good guess. Yeah, I guess the easiest way to find out would be to ask whoever is doing the recert jump with me. I doubt the radio thing will be an issue. I dont think they make you wear a radio for recert jumps. The visor isnt tinted, so that isnt a problem. Sux that you are still up in the cold. HAHA!! Yeah, i' m planning on jumping tomorrow. Thought the weather was gonna be crap this weekend, but the forecast went from scattered showers to partly cloudy. Now lets just hope the winds cooperate.

Your body tells the instructor what you're doing in the air; your eyes tell him what you're thinking, how you're feeling, whether everything is OK and whether he can release you or not. It's sort of important.

You can see a lot in a persons eyes. The few instructors I've talked to about this also want the student to see their eyes. Seeing the instructor calm and relaxed helps the student to do the same.

Ask any AFF instructor and they'll tell you - they want to see your eyes.

I have a pair of Sorz goggles with smoke lens (and I like them a lot) B|
At Perris, I did my last 2 AFF jumps with those and back in Holland I did my checkout jump at Texel with the same goggles. Neither instructor objected.
In fact, I still remember the little conversation I had before I first used them:
Me: Hey Stuart, can I use these, or do you want me to wear clear lenses?
JM: Do you think you'll do well with those?
Me: Well, shouldn't really matter, but ehm...
JM: Tell you what. If you do well you can wear 'em. But if you screw up, you gotta wear the crappy ones, ok?

I can guarenty my JM was looking at my eyes. I think it was LVL5 jump (backflips) I did my first back flip good and then went into my second and kinda got stuck on my back ( little bit of panic on my part being first time on my back) anyway I pulled through the flip and when I landed the first thing my JM said to me was "man you should have seen you eyes!!! they were as big as soucers going through the second flip!!" So I know there really paying attention !
