namdrib 0 #1 April 26, 2006 Well, after many many years of putting off getting my Tandem rating, I finally decided to get it. Things were going exceptionally smooth when it came to THE LAST JUMP for certification. You guys know the one, take your final "up jumper" on a tandem so you can start getting paid for them. Everything went very smooth, exit was right on the money like all the others, freefall was uneventful and drogue release was flawless. Yep, everything was running great TILL THIS TIME! We got absolutely whacked. Looked up and saw a picture perfect line over!!! After a couple attempts to clear the line, it was go time. Cutaway, and there was a beautiful reserve over our heads. It was awesome!!! Just thought I would boast a little. Thanks for reading!Unknowing attempting to take out all 4 wheeled vehicles remotely close to the landing area! tdog 0 #2 April 26, 2006 If you had a wuffo, they would say... "We had a malfunction????" But, you had an experienced jumper - so what was he/she yelling??? What did they think?

namdrib 0 #6 April 27, 2006 It was Sean Tillery and he said in a very calm voice: "Dude, just chop that F*&$ing thing"! Kudo's to him for not freakin' out. I think he has about 500 jumps or so and he handled it very well, thanks Sean!!!Unknowing attempting to take out all 4 wheeled vehicles remotely close to the landing area! Adrenalinejunky 0 #7 May 1, 2006 I have always liked reading about everyones first experience with a tandem cutaway. I just wasn't sure when I would be here talking about mine. After this weekend, my time has finally come. I always wondered what kind of mal I would have for my first reserve ride, and Saturday I got to find out. After a great skydive with a relatively small student, it was time for that fun canopy ride......well, so I thought. As we got line stretch, I suddenly felt the sharp pain of being slapped in the face and neck. And of course had the first thought "what the hell was that"!! Looked up to see broken lines on the right side, accompanied by blue skies due to the fact that we began to spin on our back. It is amazing how slow everything seems to move sometimes. The spin seemed slow and rather calm, but everyone on the ground said we were hauling ass!! I looked down, grabbed my handles, and let my student know "here we go again". I learned that I am a little uncomfortable with an RSL on a tandem rig for the same reason that I don't have one on my sport rig. With a spinning mal, I didn't have a chance to get belly to earth before deploying my reserve. Saw the reserve bridle come over my left shoulder as we were rolling over belly to earth. Of course once on the ground, I realized that I looked like someone took a whip to my face. A few lacerations, but that was the least of my concerns. My student told me he knew something was strange because "we were falling, then we stopped..........then were were falling again"!!!! I couldn't help but laugh. All in all, it was a great skydive, and of course I made sure to buy my rigger his bottle for the save. I am glad that first one is out of the way, and I am not in any hurry for another one. And of course my student loved getting two rides for the price of one!!!!!!
flynskydive 0 #8 May 15, 2006 Yeh, I had my first tandem cutaway last week. Opened with a snivle snivle smack. It happens, so I released the toggles and looked up... As soon as I released the toggles we started a right turn, so I countered with the left toggle. Now when one toggle is at your waist and the other is not, something isn't right. I can't exactly say what it was, but the front right side lines were tight and junked up, and the rear lines were loose and flaping as was the right rear of the canopy. So it was either a line over, a buncha tension knots, or both... A couple attempts to clear, nothing happening... "Alright dude, this parachute isn't working out to well... so here's what we're gonna do. This will feel a little weird..." So I kept it flying straight, peeled the cutaway, gave a 3, 2, let of go of the left toggle, chop! Clean cutaway, clean reserve deployment, uneventful landing after that. Told the student he just got two for the price of one! Can't beat that! Anyway, it was my first tandem cutaway, goodtimes! USPA Strong T-I, AFF-I, Coach, Videographer/photographer. dragon2 2 #11 May 17, 2006 QuoteSigma but no skyhook? Cool that you got it on ground video! /D Sigma main canopy, not Sigma rig. I think it's an Advance rig. It wasn't one of our regular rigs. It took me a couple revolutions before it occured to me that I had a camera around my neck I thought it was kinda cool too, and everyone keeps laughing at me saying "ching!" heh heh We actually had 3 cutaways in 1 day, with the 2 tandem reserves in the same (first) load... The third cutaway I was too horrified to film, as I saw a streamering reserve and a still-attached main spiral around each other at +/- 1500 ft, the main finally departed at 1000-1200ft and all was well, including my heart rate Didn't even think about filming that one... This mess was the result of a pilotchute in tow with full cutaway procedures but with a main that decided to then leave but got stuck on one 3ring for a while Took us a few secs to figure it out as the reserve was a multi colored Raven, it looked to me like someone had plucked a released main out of the sky, at first ciel bleu, Saskia
