SatchFan 0 #1 January 7, 2002 I started skydiving through the tandem progression method about 2 months ago and had made it to IAF level III yesterday. The objective of the skydive is 2 360 turns and forward movement. On my first dive, I felt it went well but did not do the turns well enough to pass. My JM said I did everything fine.....I just needed to RELAX and not tense up. I decided to try it again and I failed miserably. The exit went great and I was flying much more relaxed until I started my first turn. I dipped my shoulder way to far and started to spin out of control. I tried correcting myself but I still don't have good body awareness during freefall so I tried correcting myself the wrong way which made the spin even worse. At that point the only thing that went through my mind was what my JM told me. "During a spin out of control.....PULL." So, that's exactly what I did. Here I was at about 9500ft with my canopy already opened and this was the first jump without radio assistance for landing. Knowing that I had a long canopy ride down I started second guessing my decision to skydive. Not because it scared me, I never felt my life was in danger but because of the sheer embarrassment of such a big screw up. When I landed and walked into the hangar I didn't even want to look at anybody in the face. During the debriefing my JM told me that it was not as bad as I thought it was and right before I reached for my ripcord he was getting ready to dock with me to stop my spin. All the experienced jumpers came up to me to tell me that they have all done that before too but I know it was an attempt to make me feel better. I thought that was nice but the fact is I wasted a skydive. I don't know that I will ever become relaxed enough to do something simple like a 360 turn. But I have spent a lot of money on this sport that I have become addicted to but I know that it's not for everybody. My frustration may get the best of me if I try it again. I don't think I could handle myself if I made the same mistake twice. Does anyone have any pointers on how to turn at a reasonable speed? Thanks for your help. RemiAndKaren 0 #2 January 7, 2002 Relax man....most if not all of us failed one or more of our PFF/AFF/SL progession jumps......what you need to remember is to relax and practice the turns on the ground. All basic moves are small, controled, smooth inputs. Remember: slow is smooth and smooth is fast. And that last jump, wasted????? I'd rather say congrats on you first cross country! PhreeZone 20 #3 January 7, 2002 Yep... I failed 2 of the student jumps.Best advice.... take your time on the turns, so what if it takes you 10 seconds to go around, at least you are showing you are in control the entire time and no instructor will fail you for that. Play more with your hands in the turns instead of the shoulders too.I want to touch the sky, I want to fly so high ~ Sonique

TheMarshMan1 0 #5 January 7, 2002 I also failed my level 2 AFF jump once. No biggie really, my instructors were really cool about it, and they helped me through it both mentally and physically. One thing that helps immensely- PRACTICE ON THE GROUND... Some people may think its pointless, but do it anyways, who cares- its free. Get a creeper, and get into your body position, and just keep practicing that muscle memory. I'm willing to bet it WILL pay off. Relax, and visualize having a wonderful, perfect skydive as your riding to altitude. Good luck, you'll get through it....Blue skies,Marshall
 QuickDraw 0 #6 January 7, 2002 Also looking at where yer from, don't you have the Pidgeon Forge near ?Maybe a little time in there my help...just to get back into the swing of things.
