would like to take a class or hire a experienced packer to spend a few hours with packing and taking questions. located in Minnesota. or does any one know of a class going on?

You can buy a DVD called Packing Made Simple from the web site www.packing-made-simple.com

Combine that with the PD on line packing tutorials and you will have all the packing class you need in your own home and rewind any section as often as needed.

It's always nice to have one on one instruction but these combined will suffice in the absence of a packing class.

Be the canopy pilot you want that other guy to be.

Ask one of your instructors or a rigger at your DZ. Learning to pack from just watching videos online is not a very good idea. If you have gone through a packing class and need a quick refresher a video may work.

I have a question regarding packing.

sorry to hijack the thread.

I am getting some new gear but my DZ is closed, I will be going on a couple jump vacations and was thinking that before then I would practice packing by packing then manually unpacking and repacking my rig a few times.

Anyone see any harm in that? I just want to increase my speed in packing so i'm not relying on packers at DZ's but cutting down the 30 minutes it currently takes me so I can get on more loads.

agreed, I would ask at my drop zone but its pretty much closed up for the winter. I suppose I could dig around at a DZ thats open in the winter though, probably my next step.

Exactly, which means that the majority of the staff have a ton of extra time on their hands. Call the DZO and see who he thinks would be interested, and get a phone number.

I would imagine that a packer or instructor would be happy to help out with a private packing lesson. I would think $40-ish to $50-ish, along with food and beverages, should cover it.

It won't harm the rig, provided you're doing it right. Like I reccomended to the other guy, get a hold of one of the packers or instructors from your DZ, and schedule a private lesson.

With a new-to-you rig, you'll want someone there to answer questions about the various parts and techniques for pakcing that rig. They can help you figure out how to fold the canopy so it fits in the bag, and so the bag fits in the container. You can get the closing loop adjusted properly, and tips on routing and stowing the bridle and PC.

On top of that, you can also get some 'general' pointers on your packing, and really make some progress toward chipping away at that 30 min packing time.

Once you've done the above, then go ahead and pack your rig a dozen times to really get your technique down and speed up. Save yourself time, money and hassles on your vacation by pakcing your own stuff, and still being able to make every other load.

What Dave said. Just because the DZ is closed doesn't mean all the jumpers, instructors and riggers have disappeared. You just have to ask a little harder to find them. The DZ should still be answering a phone. Now is the time to do it. Not while the DZ is open and no one has time to work with you.

30 minutes is an excellent time. That amount of time wont make or break you getting on the next load. Any faster and you would want two rigs if you want to jump more in the given time. I would say that packing and jumping is a bit more tiring than just passing your rig off to a packer and jumping.
