Who has more tunnel time than freefall time?

Recommended Posts

I just realized that I have about six hours of freefall time, and eight hours of tunnel time. I'm not sure what to think about that. Who else has more tunnel time than freefall time?

As of right now I have more air time then tunnel time. But if my rehab goes as planned that will change this winter as I am grounded all summer, and am hoping to hit the tunnel up this fall/winter. I have over 6 and half hours of FF...and 5 hours of tunnel :D

I have 5 hours, 10 minutes of tunnel and 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 1 second of freefall time.

:D Whoops! Well...unless I do some massive skydiving between now and November, I'll be forever in the more tunnel time than freefall time. :D

I've got about 1300 jumps with many of them opening up high, but let's just say 1300 minutes of freefall or about 21 hours.

I've got about 100 hours of tunnel time sooooooo, yeah, I'd say I have more tunnel time than freefall time, hance the sig line :P:)

Took nearly 18 years to push about 36 hours of freefall time.

But only 3 years to get half that in the tunnel.

I'm certain tunnel time will pass up the freefall time in the next few years.

does tunnel time count as freefall time? I've heard one big-name person say it does, others say it doesn't.

What do you mean by "count" - do you mean does it count toward ratings and licenses? USPA does not count tunnel time as freefall time.

Personally, I do not count tunnel time as freefall time since you're not actually in freefall, you're in a wind tunnel.

Well officially, that means your title is "tunnel rat", not "skydiver".:P

I would be surprised if ANY experienced skydiver said this. Tunnels are a valuable tool to help teach one portion of freefall. They don't teach exits, and they don't teach tracking. They don't really even teach those times when you're pretty far from your group and need to catch up quick, or if you're very low or very high. The only thing they teach is the basic body positions you need to fly and working with others when you're already pretty close to them. But that's still a good thing, as I think many people seem have the most trouble with that one part.

Also, USPA wouldn't count tunnel time toward any qualifying freefall time, such as the required six hours of freefall to get the AFF rating.

You can learn a little more than just that in a wind tunnel ;)
